five places around singapore, five stalls to eat at - mguide

Food is everywhere in Singapore, with eating being one of our national hobbies. But, not all dishes are prepared equally, so here’s our pick on some of our favourite stalls!

In the second instalment of our new series, mGuides, we aim to bring you something that is (hopefully) a little different each week, which we hope can also provide you some ideas on things to do for the weekends or your time off!

Last week, it was about unorthodox activities you could do in the west. This week, we are doing our own list on five stalls that we feel are worth checking out on our sunny island! We have split Singapore up into five districts: North, South, East, West and Central, with a stall in each of these areas for you to head to! So, start planning your driving route to these stalls now!

East – 456 Mian Fen Guo

Starting in the East is 456 Mian Fen Guo, a stall in the Foodhub 59 coffeeshop that is known for its Mee Hoon Kueh (also known in mandarin as Mian Fen Guo). While there are other types of noodles available too, most customers are there predominantly for the stall’s namesake dish.

The noodles are cooked until they are al-dente, which leaves them firm yet tender when bitten into. Have them dry and tossed in a savoury soy-based sauce, or in soup form. Also, be prepared to queue for at least 30 minutes as the noodles are only prepared fresh to order. Parking isn’t an issue here, with the stall being located within a HDB estate, there is ample parking available at the surrounding open air carparks.

Address: 59 New Upper Changi Road, Singapore 461059Operating Hours: Friday to Tuesday, 9am to 2pm
Parking: Standard HDB Parking Rates Apply

Central – Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionary

Having been around since the 1970’s, Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionary has been churning out old school buns and cakes for as long as they have been around. While the stall has buns with different fillings like curry, hot dogs and coconut, they are best known for their luncheon meat buns.

Yes, some would question what is the point of a slice of processed meat in between a bun, but as we all grow older, we start to search for that feeling of nostalgia, and the buns from this stall helps to bring back that feeling. Ample parking is available around the area, with streetside parking and an open air carpark in front of the hawker centre.

Address: 49A Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555945Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 6am to 2pm
Parking: Location Streetside Parking Rates Apply

South – Raja Bojun Sri Lankan Food

Located within the food mecca which is Tekka Centre, Raja Bojun Sri Lankan Food is as no-frills and authentic as you can get. Just point to what you want, which could be Pepper Chicken, Beetroot Curry or Coconut Sambal, and you’ll be served a tray with a generous portion of rice. On weekends, they have specials like Jackfruit or Mango Curry too.

Yes, there is a Sri Lankan restaurant nearby in Little India too, but with significantly higher prices. At Raja Bojun, you can enjoy homecooked-style food at reasonable prices, and wash it down with tea from the neighbouring drink stall. Parking is easy as well, with an underground carpark at Tekka Centre, and streetside parking on the adjacent streets.

Address: 665 Buffalo Rd, Singapore 210665Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 9.30pm
Parking: Park at Tekka Centre, Monday to Sunday, 7am to 6pm: $2.00 for 1st hour, subsequent 30mins at $1.00. 6pm to 12am: $3.00 per entry. 12am to 7am: $1.00 per 30mins

West – He Ji Braised Duck

One of the most popular stalls at West Coast Market Square, He Ji Braised Duck consistently sees long queues. The stall specialises in braised duck, which can be served with noodles, porridge, or the most popular option, braised rice. Combined with the thick and savoury braised gravy, it’s not hard to see why this stall is so popular.

The stall also has other options like Kway Chap, braised tofu and braised duck offal, but it is obvious that most people are there for the braised duck. It is not uncommon to see large takeaway orders, which does contribute to the long waiting times of at least 20 to 30 minutes, especially during lunchtime. At least parking is easy, as the market is located within a HDB estate, an open air car park surrounds it, with lots aplenty.

Address: 726 Clementi West Street 2, Singapore 120726Operating Hours: Thursday to Tuesday, 8am to 5pm
Parking: Standard HDB Parking Rates Apply

North – Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang

This is the only Michelin Guide-recommended stall on this list, and with little surprise. Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang takes pride in serving an Indonesian dish called Ayam Taliwang, and they have grown from this original stall in Yishun Park Hawker Centre to four other stalls around Singapore.

While they also served other kinds of chicken and fish dishes, the Ayam Taliwang is undoubtedly the dish that put them on the map. Grilled chicken is slathered in a thick sauce that is sweet, spicy and tangy that goes wonderfully with the rice, all while being reasonably priced. The hawker centre has an attached multi-storey carpark, but if that is full, parking is also available at the HDB estate behind the hawker centre.

Address: 51 Yishun Ave 11, Singapore 768867Operating Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 6.30am to 7pm. Saturday, 6.30am to 6pm. Sunday, 6.30am to 4.30pm.
Parking: $0.60 per 30 minutes, Monday to Sunday
