California based American electric automotive producer Fisker Inc. founded by the applauded automotive designer and entrepreneur Henrick Fisker in a recent interview revealed that his company is looking forward to entering India to produce the second model from the brand, the Fisker Pear, in the coming years and as of now they are in the initial stages of setting up its first India entity, a global technology centre, in Hyderabad.
Partnering with Foxconn, the Taiwanese tech company known for building iPhones, Fisker Inc. will first commence the production of the Fisker Pear in the United States and Europe but later on, it will set up manufacturing plants in India and China to start the production of the affordable electric mobility vehicle Pear. During the interview, Fisker said, “Why India and China? Because this vehicle will start at under USD 30,000 (around INR 22 lakh). So, it will be affordable, yet spacious with new types of storage spaces, and technology not seen in its segment. And we can accomplish that if only we make a million vehicles a year,”
Fisker Inc. founder also divulged that their first Indian company which is a technology centre that will be located in Hyderabad has already started the recruitment and a team of around 300 engineers will be primarily working on the software technologies for the brand. Henrick Fisker while speaking on the Indian entities role said, “Software development is a big strength in India,” In addition to it he said that the press release for the Indian technology facility will be sent out to the media in the coming weeks although apart from that not much was revealed by him.
Upon being asked if his company has started to sieve out the locations for its potential production plants in the Indian subcontinent, the acclaimed designer said that as of now they have not finalized any venue but in future, they will be entering negotiations with the government to set up their manufacturing plants. He added that Fisker Inc. is looking to start the production of its vehicle on Indian soil before its biggest rival Tesla starts producing its vehicles here. During the interview he also revealed that he has a personal connection with India as his wife, Dr Geeta Gupta Fisker is from India and he has visited the country many times.
As of now, Fisker Inc. has debuted its first production EV SUV the Ocean to the world and it will also be the first vehicle that will be launched in India. Initially, this SUV will be imported and sold as a CBU in India but if the company can recognize a stronger demand then it will also potentially starts its production in India. Currently, the Fisker Ocean has received more than 25,000 bookings around the globe and some of them are also from India. The Ocean is priced at USD 37,000 (around INR 27 lakh) and USD 69,000 (around INR 51 lakh).
Apart from it, the company is more focused on its second model the Pear to launch in India as it will be the brands most affordable model with prices starting at under USD 30,000 (around INR 22 lakh) and as stated by Fiker, the car will sport a revolutionary and very unconventional design and will appeal to a younger audience. The company founder while detailing his upcoming creation said, “We are doing something that is much more risky, that you probably need to get used to. And some people may not even like it. It’s going to be way too strange for them, too futuristic. But I don’t believe in doing strange things just to make it strange and then it becomes ugly. If you do something different it still has to have a sense of beauty in it,”
