After months of waiting, the Maserati MC20, the successor to the legendary MC12, has finally landed on South African shores.
The first unit in multi-layer Bianco Audace paint is already in the hands of its new owner and a second one, finished in Blu Infinito, is currently on display at the Maserati House in Johannesburg.
“The Maserati MC20 welcomes a new era for Maserati, both globally and in South Africa,” said the automaker.
“As a nameplate, it signals the return to racing in closed-wheel competitions for a brand that was born on the racetrack. And for Maserati South Africa, it opens the order book for the MC20, the Levante Hybrid, and soon, the new Maserati Grecale.”
Mid-engine V6
A classic mid-engined supercar, the MC20 is driven by a bi-turbo Nettuno V6 engine packing an incredible 484kW and 750Nm.
With its carbon body, the Maserati weighs less than 1,500kg, which combined with the generous power output lets it sprint from 0-100km/h in a blistering 2.88 seconds.
Its top speed is equally impressive, as the coupe is able to blast past 326km/h.
“As a super sports car, the MC20 represents the pinnacle of performance and a return to Maserati-unique power plants with its Nettuno engine,” said the Italian carmaker.
Each unit that is being brought to South Africa has been extensively customized and exclusively built-to-order by its buyer.
Customers spend time with Maserati in a configuration room to design their model as part of the Fuoriserie customization programme, and they also have the option of visiting the Modena manufacturing plant to witness their supercar being built.
A few of the standard features fitted to each MC20 include a digitalised interior, model-exclusive leather/Alcantara upholstery, and an electronic limited-slip diff, along with a number of driving aids such as parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, and traffic sign recognition.
The cherry on top, this Maserati also sports flashy butterfly doors giving it that distinctive supercar feel.
