If you’ve been waiting for it, Lamborghini’s first all-electric vehicle will launch in 2028, according to company CEO Stephan Winkelmann. The new car would not replace any of the marque’s existing model lines, he explained in a chat with Auto Express. Instead, the vehicle will be a “fourth model which will be more daily useable.” The EV will apparently have two doors, a 2+2-seat layout, and increased ground clearance. All this hints that it will be more closely related to the Urus than the Aventador or Huracan — a crossover, perhaps.
Technical details are, understandably, still very sketchy at this point. However, Lamborghini intends to leverage its membership within the Volkswagen Group to accelerate development and manage associated costs. The carmaker has benefited from such synergy in the past. The Lamborghini CEO pointed out how the Urus rides on the same mechanical platform as the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg.
Following this logic, it is reasonable to assume the upcoming Lamborghini EV will ride on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture currently being developed by the VW Group. The SSP’s unified EV architecture is expected to launch in 2026 under a VW-badged Trinity Sedan.
Crucially, though, Lamborghini stated its engineers had found a way to address the issue of bulk — the bane of all current EVs. If the carmaker is to be believed, customers will not have to worry about the Lamborghini EV being too heavy, unwieldy, or ponderous on the roads.
The fact that a Lamborghini is embracing electrification does not signal the end of combustion engines. Winkelmann notes that hybrid vehicles will remain a part of the lineup for “as long as possible.” He even touted the possibility of employing synthetic, carbon-neutral fuels to keep combustion engines relevant in the company’s long-term plans. ‘We don’t need to decide now — we still have some time,” he said. “After 2025 [once the entire range is electrified] we need to take a decision then.” Exciting times ahead, then, for the Raging Bull brand.
