The newest Ferrari flagship is the greenest ever.
As one might expect, Ferraris latest hypercar (megacar?), the SF90 Stradale, is full of firsts; thing is, they may not all be the kind of firsts that gearheads and Ferrari aficionados alike want to hear about. First V8 engine in a flagship car. First plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV). First time a Ferrari flagship has been AWD. Greenest Ferrari ever.
Hold on a minute, though. Much as we like to talk about extreme, put hair-on-your-chest Ferraris like the F40, the F50, or the F12 TDF, isn’t Ferrari really about delivering the most performance and cutting edge technology available today?
Because the SF90 has all of that. 985 combined hp, and 769 torques (plus 590 lb-ft) if you rely just on the twin-turbo V8 – that’s more than what was made by V12s in the F12 Berlinetta as well as the GTC4 Lusso – 200 mph in less than seven seconds, 8 speeds, three electric motors (one of which comes from their F1 car) and all weighing in at just over 1,500 kilos. It’s enough to power the SF90 around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in around the same time it took the LaFerrari, which didn’t have full-EV cruising ability. The SF90 does, to the tune of 25 km, according to the manufacturer.
Power is one thing, but helping the SF90 to that time is the existence of torque vectoring, brake-by-wire, and something called electronic slide slip control (eSSC), which distributes power to whichever wheel needs it most.
As is expected, most of the styling is done with aerodynamics in mind first and foremost; all those cuts, intakes and wings you see help provide up to 390 kilos of downforce at 250 km/h (a walk in the park, in SF90 world), and the entire cabin has been dropped 20 mm for an even lower centre of gravity.
Inside, a 16” digital display is used for the gauge cluster, while Ferrari says the driver will be able to control pretty much everything in the cockpit without ever taking their hands off the wheel.
No pricing has yet to be announced – no surprise, there – but you can bet that most of these are already sold, regardless.
