The VA Subaru WRX signified a change in the brand's long-running rally experimental vehicle. A new engine, slightly different approach and premium feeling sports car. Here's everything you need to know about the Subaru WRX.
In this article:
Is the Subaru WRX a good car?
The Subaru WRX VA generation did things differently compared to WRXs of old. You see a new engine, luxury features and manners that make the WRX VA a mature sports car which is more than capable with Subaru’s patented all-wheel-drive system. Its brilliance comes from it being a jack of all trades but also being quirky and unique in its own right.
Who is the Subaru WRX a good car for?
The Subaru WRX VA is a good car for someone who wants practicality, power and something that flies under the radar. Whether you are a single person, couple or small family, the WRX can handle those duties and at the same time double as a sports car.
Is the Subaru WRX a good first car?
Due to the sports car nature, the WRX would not be good for a first car. It’s too powerful for new drivers and at the same time, demands your attention when it comes to maintenance. If affordability is not an issue, we then recommend an advanced driving course for those who really want one of these machines.
Is the Subaru WRX a good family car?
The Subaru WRX would be a decent family car for smaller families. Remember, this vehicle is a compact sedan but also opens the avenues of adventuring with the ability to tow 1 200kg braked and 750kg unbraked. It also offers roof racks for any additional luggage. The boot is quite sizeable for a compact sedan at 460 Litres and can be extended using the 60:40 split folding rear seats. Practicality is the name of the game here.
Is there a Hybrid Subaru WRX?
There was no hybrid Subaru WRX in the VA generation.

What’s it like to drive?
Reviewer’s opinion
“Following a recent and fairly comprehensive update, the Subaru WRX reverts to the harder edge of its famous predecessors. The suspension is firmer again, and the brakes are much improved, but at the same time, it adds a number of premium features to woo the luxury-inclined set as well.”
– Martin Pretorius

What is the Subaru WRX like inside?
While a more mature design, the WRX VA still inspires excitement and sportiness. The cabin has tech aplenty, leather bucket seats, and a small but thick leather-wrapped steering wheel while also giving spacious comfort. The WRX VA feels premium and durable inside. If anything, it’s on par with what a Volkswagen GTI would offer.
Style
While still a compact sedan that has grown a bit, the WRX sports a confident broad stance. One of the easiest giveaways of its trusted Subaru nature is the large bonnet scoop channelling air to the intercooler. Other sporty cues include; quad exhaust tips, a small boot lid spoiler, sharp yet aggressively designed foglamp shrouds and air dams in the front with projector headlamps giving off a mean stare. The aesthetic is seasoned go-fast here.
