Who is the Kia Sorento a good car for?
The Kia Sorento is a good car for anyone who is big on comfort as well as space. If you need seating for seven, the Sorento is one of the best cars you can buy, depending on your lifestyle’s needs, of course, and your budget.
Is the Kia Sorento a good first car?
The Sorento is not ideal for new drivers, due to its price and size, but it’s still a safe choice if you’re after a large vehicle that fits all your friends and family.
Not in need of major space? Look into a used Kia Sonet SUV or Kia Rio hatch, or even the smallest Kia namely the Kia Picanto if you’re keen on a Kia as your first car.

It’s perfect for luxury-loving families who need seating for up to seven or who just need a five-seater with a massive boot and plenty of tech on board. it’s also a very safe car with 5-star crash test ratings.

Overseas markets have hybrid Sorentos but it’s not on the cards for SA just yet.

What’s it like to drive?
Reviewer’s opinion
The Sorento is powered by Kia’s new SmartStream 2.2 CRDi diesel engine mated to an 8-speed DCT transmission which is silky smooth in its operation, the combination pumps out 148kW and 440Nm and the drive is nothing short of sublime and effortless in its operation. The suspension and drivetrain can be controlled with the drive modes and can be tailored to the conditions that a driver may find themselves in.
Our drive in the Sorento saw us tackle open roads, busy suburban streets and of course, misty coastal roads and it was indeed something special. Plenty of power underfoot when needed and a complaint and comfortable suspension made sure that the kilometres just slipped by. Fuel consumption figures also surprised, with our combined-cycle drive costing us just 5.9l/100km. – Lawrence Minnie, AutoTrader

What does it look like?
Exterior
What is the Kia Sorento like inside?
The Sorento’s interior is very upmarket, and is good enough to rival the premium brands like Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which is one of the many reasons it’s been handed so many international awards! It’s a fine place to spend time in.
Tech features
The attractive, upscale cabin introduces a sophisticated next-generation design, based around twin digital displays in the dashboard. The 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster is twinned with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system at the centre of the dashboard. These display information clearly within the driver’s line of sight, and create an innovative wide-screen user experience. The car’s many functions can also be controlled with new haptic buttons on either side of the screen, which also feature further down the dashboard for the climate control system. The focal point of the dashboard is the eye-catching vertical ventilation stack, with a chrome-effect surround that extends onto the centre console below.
The cabin of the new Sorento subtly integrates a range of other technologies, including an available Mood Lamp system. This emits soft ambient downlighting from beneath the dashboard and door trim, creating a lounge-like feeling and greater sense of space. A wireless smartphone charger also sits at the base of the centre console, while a powerful BOSE surround-sound system is also available to provide a more immersive in-car audio experience. – KIA SA
