The latest, 7th-generation Isuzu, now known as the D-Max, sees the dependable, hard-working bakkie take on the leisure market with the high-spec V-Cross version.
In this article:
Is the Isuzu D-Max a good car?
The Isuzu light commercial vehicle, initially known as the KB-Series and now the D-Max, has a long and proud history in South Africa. A popular choice for farmers and construction fleets, the D-Max now blends its rugged dependability with creature comforts, appealing more to the leisure market than ever before.
Who is the Isuzu D-Max a good car for?
If you’re in the market for a hard-working bakkie and don’t mind the feel of something a little more butch and mechanical, the Isuzu D-Max may just be the one for you. It gives you the impression of bullet-proof build quality without sacrificing the luxuries that make its competitors popular in the high-end leisure market.
Is the Isuzu D-Max a good first car?
While Isuzu has introduced advanced driver assistance systems and semi-autonomous aids, the D-Max is still a large vehicle and requires an experienced hand. As such, we would not recommend it as a first car on the road. If you’re learning to drive on the private roads of the farm, then why not!?
Is the Isuzu D-Max a good family car?
The latest, 7th generation, D-Max has placed an emphasis on passenger comfort and the double cabs benefit from an increase in interior space. Rear seat passengers now have more legroom than before and 20mm more shoulder room. The rear doors are also longer than on the previous generation, making it easier to get in and out. There’s no reason why a double cab D-Max shouldn’t make a respectable family car.
Is there a Hybrid Isuzu D-Max?
There’s no hybrid option in the Isuzu D-Max range, diesel is the name of the game here. You can choose between a 1.9-litre turbdiesel or a 3.0 turbodiesel, producing 110 and 140 kW respectively.

What’s it like to drive?
Reviewer’s opinion
“The changes do help the Isuzu slot into the leisure market but Isuzu has been smart and hasn’t forgotten about the consumer who isn’t taken with the softer nature of modern light commercial vehicles and still wants a good, old fashion ‘Bakkie’… or at least one that feels like a rough-and-tumble machine that will last for years on the farm.”

What is the Isuzu D-Max like inside?
In order to appeal to the customer that is looking for a leisure bakkie, Isuzu has made the interior more luxurious with soft-touch surfaces and quality upholstery. Additional tech has been injected into the cabin with certain models receiving a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Style
The 7th generation D-Max is longer, lower and more aggressively styled than before and these changes not only help improve the handling dynamics, but the overall impression of the D-Max. High specification variants, like the LSE and V-Cross, receive Bi-LED headlights that flank an aggressive front end and devilish grille design. The back of these models also receive LED taillamps to complete the look.
The lowered roofline and extended load bin help lend an air of sportiness to the latest D-Max, drawing away from the agricultural feel of earlier generations. This is further aided by a host of new colours made available to the D-Max.
