In this article:

Is the Fiat Tipo a good car?

The Tipo is a value proposition from the Italian automaker and the motive here according to Fiat is “Skills, no frills”. So a compact vehicle that gives you what you need in terms of comfort, performance and ergonomics. The Tipo is available in South Africa in both hatchback and sedan forms, it offers good value for money.

Who is the Fiat Tipo a good car for?

The Fiat Tipo is a good car for young individuals and small families who want a versatile vehicle with assertive styling. While the hatchback is more suited for urban commuting, the sedan offers the extra luggage space required by families.

Is the Fiat Tipo a good first car?

Yes, the Fiat Tipo is a good first car. It has compact sizing which makes it easy to pilot with a nice safety feature set. The Tipo comes in with both manual and automatic gearbox options to suit different driving styles. Its dynamic driving attributes will make this a fun car to drive for newer drivers.

Is the Fiat Tipo a good family car?

The Fiat Tipo will make for a good family car. Regardless of if you pick the hatchback or sedan; convenience, visibility, ergonomics and space were top of mind when this vehicle was being designed. Not only are 5 adults seated in comfort, but you also get massive luggage space, 440-litre for the hatchback and 520-litre for the sedan.

Is there a Hybrid Fiat Tipo?

While in other global markets the Tipo can be had with a hybrid powertrain, locally Fiat only offer 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines. There is no indication, at the time of writing this article, for a hybrid variant to go on sale in South Africa.

What’s it like to drive?

Reviewer’s opinion

So the new Fiat Tipo is really an excellent all-round package but there is an elephant in the room, and that 1.4-litre petrol engine. You see it has 70 kW but only 127 Nm of torque which means it really suffers up here at the reef. And down at the coast with the hill type country, it is going to labour a little.

What is the Fiat Tipo like inside?

Entering the Fiat Tipo, you are greeted by black and dark grey interior upholstery. The dash components are comprised of oval shapes running parallel to each other. The Tipo has a plethora of storage compartments totalling 12-litres of space. You will also find that there is a lot of padding in the interior space to aid comfort and noise reduction. There’s plenty of padding on the seats too to help with comfort, especially for adults.

Style

The Fiat Tipo has bold, rugged and assertive exterior styling. A nice way of moving away from the boring styling usually associated with compact family vehicles of yesteryear. A furrowed brow, slim LED daytime running headlights with a chrome sprinkled horizontal mesh grille features upfront, the latter adorned with the new Fiat badge. The rest of the design is sharp and sporty in both hatchback and sedan fascias with tasteful lines and cues with an air of elegance to it too. Customers can expect 15-inch wheels on lower specified variants while the flagship model offers 17-inch units.
