Swedish high-performance electrified carmaker Polestar has laid out a robust plan to become a significant player in the luxury EV space. The company has three electric vehicles in the pipeline, including a Tesla Model Y rival – the Polestar 4.
The Polestar 4 would become the brand’s key volume achievers. It’ll belong to a segment popular in the brand’s central markets such as the U.S. and the UK. Polestar says that the 4 will be a “premium sport SUV” that costs similar to the Porsche Macan. In the EV world, though, the Tesla Model Y and Audi e-tron Sportback and Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback would be its main rivals. In 2025, the Lotus Type 134 will join the list, and it could be technically related to the 4.
Design
While the Polestar 3 will be an SUV, the Polestar 4 will be an SUV-coupe. It should feature muscular shoulders and a lower roof that steeply slopes down to the rear. The more aerodynamic exterior should have a direct effect on the energy consumption and lead to a higher range.

Specifications
According to an investor document Polestar published in September 2020, the Polestar 4 will sit on the PMA platform. However, Geely Auto Group has upgraded the PMA platform and renamed it to the SEA platform. Announced in September 2020, the SEA platform currently underpins the Zeekr 001. This model can travel up to 712 km (442 miles) on a full charge with a 100 kWh battery pack and hit 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds with its 400 kW/768 Nm dual-motor powertrain. The Polestar 4 may also ride on the upgraded platform.
Production
Though Volvo Car Group plans to make the Polestar 3 in the U.S., it has no intentions of manufacturing the Polestar 4 anywhere other than in China. The company has finalized the Hangzhou Bay factory that Geely owns and operates as its production site. Based on jobs per hour according to Geely practices, Polestar estimates this facility can roll out 240,000 vehicles annually.
Polestar 4 release date
Polestar plans to launch the 4 at the end of 2023, about a year after the Polestar 3. The company expects to sell 6,000 units in 2023, 43,000 units in 2024, and 79,000 units in 2025. The Polestar 5 will join the lineup in 2024.
