The Hummer EV Pickup is the most in-your-face electric pickup truck out there. The EV Pickup and its SUV sibling leave customers spellbound with their outlandish design, exceptional off-road capability, and a powertrain that produces up to four-digit power and torque figures. The Hummers of the yore weren’t minimalist by any means, but GMC has dialed things up by several notches on its electric pickup.
Here’s everything we know about the GMC Hummer EV Pickup in April 2022:
Design
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup looks unmistakably Hummer. Upfront, the EV has an upright stance with a raised bonnet line. The most prominent element is the full-width LED light bar, which functions as a DRL and doubles up as a charging status indicator when the EV is plugged in. The EV also has large door-mounted rearview mirrors and squared-off wheel arches.
There are three roof-mounted (front and rear) identification lights mandated by the U.S. government for wide vehicles. The headlamps are housed below on the front bumper, which also has two heavy-duty tow hooks (front and rear each) and a muscular skid plate that appears to be built to withstand some serious off-road beating.

Enormous Tires
Another highlight of the Hummer EV Pickup is the tire size. The EV comes with enormous 35-inch OD (overall diameter) Goodyear all-terrain tires wrapped around 22-inch wheels. GM also offers 35-inch OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT Tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels for extreme off-roading. The EV is engineered to fit even larger 37-inch tires.
Infinity Roof with Sky Panels
GMC wants Hummer EV Pickup owners to enjoy an open-air driving experience similar to convertibles. The transparent panoramic roof is a standard feature across the range. Additionally, customers can remove the roof panels with a few simple clicks and store them in the frunk (11.3 cu ft), designed to accommodate all the removable panels.

Smartly engineered cargo bed
We cannot go without talking about the Hummer EV Pickup’s forte, its rear flatbed. The EV’s flatbed measures 60 inches (5 feet) in length. It can haul cargo up to 1300 pounds, claims GMC. That said, the towing capacity of the EV—it has four heavy-duty tow hooks, two at the front and rear each—is 7,500 pounds (GM est.).
What’s more, GMC offers an extensive range of accessories for the Hummer EV Pickup. Among them are soft and hard retractable tonneau covers to protect cargo from dust and extreme weather. 2023 onwards, the EV can also be equipped with Multipro Tailgate Audio System by Kicker, which adds weatherproof speakers in the flatbed.

Interior & Features
The 13.4-inch central infotainment screen and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display a wealth of information and cool graphics. Images: GMC
Ample digital real estate
Taking center stage in the cabin are the two massive screens. For starters, the 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system displays a wealth of information. The EV is available with Ultravision, which allows seeing up to 18 camera views on the touchscreen. This includes the front and rear underbody cameras with a washer function and replaceable lens in case it breaks during daring off-road adventures.
The 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment displays comprehensive off-road information, including pitch and roll angles, wheel travel, g-force articulation, drift gauge, chassis ride height, etc. The 12.3-inch digital cockpit in the driver’s view provides essential information to the driver, including vehicle performance, off-road statistics, driver awareness, and trail mapping projection from the myGMC app.
Lunar Shadow/Horizon Interior
No customer needs this feature. It’s something proud American customers would buy with their hearts. GMC has showcased its American heritage by offering a moon-themed interior with the topographical map of the moon on the EV’s floor and speaker grilles. The speaker graphics showcase the Sea of Tranquility and Neil Armstrong’s footprint symbolizing mankind’s first step on the moon. The Lunar Horizon trim is a slightly lighter color version of the Lunar Shadow.
Unlike in many modern EVs, the interior isn’t devoid of buttons. There are physical buttons on the three-spoke steering for cruise control, select ADAS functions, and navigating through the digital cockpits menu. More buttons are under the touchscreen for functions like diff lock and traction control. Drive modes can be selected via a rotary knob on the center console.

Hummer EV Pickup Specifications
GMC’s Ultium propulsion system have been making headlines recently, and the Hummer EV Pickup is the first vehicle to enter production equipped with it. A 24-module double-stacked battery is an integral structural element of the chassis, improving the EV’s control and stability. Do note that we are talking about the sold-out top-of-the-line Edition 1 trim here, which, according to test data GM filed with the EPA, has a usable battery pack capacity of 212.7 kWh. GMC claims that the 212.7 kWh battery pack delivers 329 miles of range on a single charge.
1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft
Brace for impact because the Hummer EV Pickup’s powertrain surpasses all old limits. The Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 comes with a tri-motor AWD set-up. Its e-motors produce 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of wheel torque. Before getting misled by the torque figure, note that EVs generally have a drive reduction ratio of 8:1, which relates to torque multiplication at the wheel. Going by this logic, the Hummer EV Pickup’s powertrain would produce 1,400 lb-ft (1,900 Nm), which is still incredibly high.
With Edition 1 now sold out, customers can only reserve the EV 3X, EV 2X, and EV 2 variants now. The 3X also comes with a tri-motor set-up, which produces 830 hp and an identical 14,500 lb-ft. While Edition 1 does the 0-60 mph sprint in 3 seconds, the 3X does it in 3.5 seconds. The EV 2 and 2X models have a dual-motor set-up with 625 hp and 7,400 lb-ft (925 lb-ft with 8:1 conversion). With 800 volt capacity and 350 kW DC fast charging, up to nearly 100 miles range can be recovered in just 10 minutes.

CrabWalk & 4 wheel steer
Standard on EV 2X, EV 3X, and Edition 1 models, features like CrabWalk and four-wheel-steering make the 218-inch long pickup as easily maneuverable as a compact SUV. The pickup has a turning radius of 37.1 feet (445.2 inches). For reference, a Toyota RAV4, 36 inches shorter in length at 180.9 inches, has a turning radius of 37.4 feet (448.8 inches). At slow speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, and at higher speeds, all wheels turn in the same direction.
Wheels can turn in the same direction at slow speeds to make the Hummer EV Pickup move diagonally, through tight spaces. Image: GMC
Customers also get CrabWalk, a feature usually offered on heavy-duty construction machines like JCB excavators. This segment-first feature offers incredible maneuverability by making all wheels steer at the same angle, up to 10 degrees, at low speeds making the EV drive diagonally to get past tight sections of trails. Moreover, the adaptive air suspension (standard on 2X and above) can raise ride height from 10.1 inches (standard) to 15.9 inches in Extract Mode to help the EV clear large obstacles like boulders.

Official GMC Hummer EV Pickup prices and launch timelines
The Hummer EV Pickup production started in late 2021 at GMC’s Factory Zero in Detroit. The facility was remodeled with a USD 2.2 billion investment to produce electric vehicles. The upcoming GMC Sierra EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV will also be manufactured at this facility. Reservations are full for Edition 1, which is the launch edition of the Hummer EV Pickup with all the bells and whistles. The rest of the variants are still available to order.
65,000 reservations
CEO Mary Barra announced in February 2022 that GM would increase the production of the Hummer EV Pickup production to 21,000 units this year, which is a six-fold increase from the figure promised earlier owing to overwhelming demand. The Hummer EV has reportedly garnered 65,000 reservations.
Despite the production ramp-up, GMC expects delivery times to extend to 2024, the group’s global VP Duncan Aldred told CNBC on March 29, 2022. The CNBC report also states that the pickup accounts for more reservations than the SUV. Also, conversion rates are unexpectedly high. 95% of reservations have been converted to orders, said Aldred.
