The 2023 Honda CR-V is one of the most popular options in the compact crossover SUV segment, and recently, Honda gave the car some major changes. Like with many other cars, however, the CR-V also received a pricing update, and it’ll now cost significantly more than it did back in the 2022 model year. That being said, one of the changes on the 2023 Honda CR-V is a feature that used to be reserved for luxury cars, and here’s a look at that.

The 2023 Honda CR-V has a major price increase compared to the 2022 model

Price increases for different model years of a car are common, but usually they’re relatively minor. For example, a price increase of a few hundred dollars isn’t out of the ordinary, and $1,000 is common as well.

That’s not what Honda did to the CR-V when the 2023 model made its debut. The 2023 model year of this popular compact SUV starts at about $32,000 with the destination cost included.

For comparison, the 2022 model year started at about $28,000. That’s a difference of over $4,000. Many automakers are blaming inflation or the supply chain crisis for price increases. Those factors likely play a role, but the main reason for this price increase has to do with trims. In the 2022 model year, the standard trim was the LX, but Honda’s dropping it for the 2023 model year.

The EX trim is now the CR-V’s standard trim. That being said, there’s still a significant price increase even when that’s accounted for. The 2022 CR-V EX started at about $30,500. That’s almost $2,000 less expensive than the 2023 CR-V EX trim.

These luxury features explain why the 2023 Honda CR-V costs more now

However, according to Honda, thanks to the fact that the EX trim is now the CR-V’s standard trim, the popular SUV will now have a lot of luxury features as standard. For example, all CR-Vs came with a long list of smart safety features, but with this new change, the 2023 CR-V has even more as standard. Blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic monitoring are now standard across all trims.

On top of that, luxury features like heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard on the new Honda SUV. Furthermore, all CR-Vs will come with a luxury feature that shoppers used to have to pay more for.

That feature is a powered moonroof, and it’ll be standard on all CR-V trims. This wasn’t standard on all trims in the 2022 model year, so that helps explain the price hike.

While the standard CR-V has a few luxury features, drivers who want more will have to spend a lot more money. A fully loaded CR-V will cost about $49,000.

An overview of the 2023 Honda CR-V

One of the other reasons why the new Honda SUV costs more is because the Japanese automaker gave the car a big update. Honda offers two engine options on the CR-V, and they were updated as well. The standard engine is a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder that gets 190 hp. Honda also offers a 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain that gets 204 hp.

The standard CR-V gets an estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on highways, for 31 mpg combined. The hybrid option gets 43 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on highways, for 39 mpg combined. Honda gave the car two 7-inch screens as standard. There’s a 7-inch digital gauge cluster display and a 7-inch touchscreen display.
