Believe it or not, every road roller is custom built and can be specified as per requirements
We have always looked at those heavy machines flattening out fresh hot tar in awe, haven’t we, but what it is like to be an owner of a road roller?
Crazy XYZ continues with its streak of insane stuff and this time they have just bought a road roller! Yes, the same road roller that we see at the road construction sites. Now if you ever wanted to own a road roller or ever wondered how they work, this video shows it all.
Owning a Road Roller!
In the video, the team buys a road roller, which seems to be quite old. They decide to give it a new paint job and clean the surface of the heavy machinery and spray paint the whole body with yellow paint. The real fun was driving the road roller though. It is an extremely heavy vehicle and cannot go at high speed.
Turning the vehicle can also be a challenge due to the manual steering system. They take the road roller out on the village roads and roam around with the heavy machinery as well!
But what powers a Road Roller?
Road rollers are generally made by collecting different parts of different types of vehicles like trucks and buses
As we said in the beginning, there are no standardized manufacturing laws about road rollers. They are manufactured by workshops using different parts of different vehicles. The shell and chassis are completely hand-built. Mechanical parts like the engine and transmission come from other vehicles as well.
This particular example is powered by a truck engine
Some road rollers use refurbished truck engines while others, more expensive ones use new engines from sellers like Kirloskar. Even manufacturers like Volvo offer road rollers but they are pretty expensive compared to these desi jugaads.
How to operate a road roller?
And the clutch is located on right side while the brake is on the left side
Starting the road roller is a task. One needs to start the vehicle by putting a starter wheel to the engine and wrapping a rope around it. Pulling the rope will start the road roller. Now the controls are completely different from a standard car or even a truck. The accelerator is hand-operated and it can be kept at one position giving the road roller cruise control capabilities.
The clutch pedal is located on the right-hand side while the brake pedal is on the left. There is a gear lever as well. The road roller does not go at a high speed. It moves around slowly and since there is no suspension system. It can become quite uncomfortable while driving it around.
Now Who wants a road roller?
Anyone can buy a road roller but since it is not standardized and cannot be registered, you cannot bring it onto the public roads. Only road construction firms get special permissions to use and operate the vehicle and it can cost close to Rs 10 lakh! Do you still want to own one? Well, let us know in the comments section below what do you think about it.
