Tras su clásico aspecto esconde componentes modernos.

Es probable que no hayas oído hablar nunca de la compañía estadounidense TLC Automotive, pero quizá el nombre comience a sonarte una vez conozcas su último proyecto, un espectacular todoterreno clásico japonés, puesto al día por completo.

La compañía en cuestión fue fundada por Jonathan y Jamie Ward en 1996, y si te suenan los nombres es porque Jonathan es conocido por fundar también Icon 4×4, una famosa firma de restauración de clásicos.

En este caso, TLC se centra en la restauración de modelos Land Cruiser, como el FJ62 de las imágenes, que data de 1988 y suma ya 33 años a sus espaldas, aunque ahora está totalmente modernizado y cuesta nada menos que 175.000 dólares (155.000 euros al cambio).

El trabajo sobre este FJ62 comienza con la restauración del chasis original de uno de estos Land Cruiser, que TLC reconstruye para dejarlo casi como recién salido de fábrica, sustituyendo infinidad de componentes.

El motor original de seis cilindros en línea, por ejemplo, deja paso a un bloque 6,2 litros V8 LS3 de origen Chevrolet, capaz de ofrecer 436 CV de potencia y un par motor máximo de 576 Nm, y que va asociado a un cambio automático de cuatro marchas (4L65E ), también de General Motors.

Gracias a este nuevo bloque V8, el FJ62 de TLC tiene casi 2,8 veces más potencia que el modelo original, cuyo seis cilindros se conformaba con apenas 157 CV. Así pues, debería ser bastante más rápido en carretera, aunque no se han anunciado especificaciones.

Lo que sí sabemos es que bajo su clásica carrocería, este Land Cruiser esconde una suspensión firmada por la compañía Old Man Emi, que dicen facilita una marcha mucho más cómoda que la de serie. Los neumáticos, por su parte, son BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 para uso todoterreno, y el equipo de frenos goza ahora de discos traseros.

En el habitáculo el FJ62 recibe un montón de mejoras, desde una tapicería de cuero hasta asientos calefactados o nuevos controles para el sistema de climatización. También encontramos un salpicadero revisado, con sistema multimedia y navegador, por ejemplo.
