Zeekr is exploring a boxy luxury off-road SUV designed to rival the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, with the Geely-owned brand already matching technical requirements with major suppliers, Chinese media outlet Future Car Daily reported on November 4. The project remains in early feasibility research without formal internal approval, with mass production tentatively targeted for 2028–2029.
Suppliers reportedly refer to the programme as a Mercedes-Benz G-Class benchmark project.
Unibody construction and multi-motor drivetrain
Unlike traditional off-roaders that typically use body-on-frame construction, the proposed Zeekr model is reportedly being developed around a unibody or semi-integral structure.
The concept combines independently controlled electric motors, long-travel air suspension and software-based vehicle recovery functions. This approach would rely on electronic torque distribution and suspension control rather than conventional mechanical off-road hardware.
The architecture would need to withstand torsional loads on uneven terrain while protecting the battery pack and underbody. Integrated battery-to-chassis rigidity would be important for maintaining structural strength. Whether Zeekr will adapt an existing Geely platform or develop a revised structure remains unknown.
Zeekr already has experience with independently controlled electric motors through the four-motor Zeekr 001 FR. Its drivetrain uses silicon-carbide motors and torque-vectoring control to distribute power between individual wheels, including for tank turns. An off-road application would require different calibration, prioritising low-speed traction, sustained loads and wheel control over uneven surfaces rather than high-speed performance.
Zeekr’s hybrid SUV technology offers a potential starting point
Zeekr’s recent large SUVs provide a possible starting point for the off-roader’s powertrain. Both the Zeekr 9X and Zeekr 8X use 900V plug-in hybrid architectures, while the performance-focused 8X produces up to 1,030 kW in its highest-output configuration.
A plug-in hybrid system could offer greater flexibility for long-distance off-road journeys where charging infrastructure is limited. However, the new model’s powertrain configuration remains unconfirmed.
Zeekr enters China’s premium off-road segment
The project follows earlier comments by Zeekr International CEO Mars Chen, who identified hardcore off-road vehicles among the brand’s potential future product directions in a May 2026 interview with Australian publication GoAuto.
The proposed SUV would enter a market that includes the BYD Yangwang U8, Fangchengbao Bao 8 and Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, which brings an all-electric powertrain to the G-Class.
