China's GWM has just revealed an updated version of its Tank 700 luxury SUV. The latest version of the Tank is a plug-in hybrid with more than 800 horsepower and 100 miles of range. But despite the ultra-aggressive appearance that makes it look ready to punch through walls and all that horsepower, this G63 AMG competitor accelerates more like a G400 diesel. This Tank Gets Even Beefier GWM Tank 700 HiZ-4 (1)GWM's Tank brand is a rugged luxury spin off from the main brand. It's exactly what Mercedes-Benz would probably love to do with the G family, and what GM has tried to do with Hummer. This time, Tank gets a version of its 700 called the Hi4-Z PHEV, the one that makes the attention-grabbing 864-hp figure. The new system replaces a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The old one got 349 hp from the engine and 174 from the motor, while the new one gets just 248 hp from its gas but 248 hp from a motor in the transmission and another 322 from one in the rear. Thanks to a 59 kWh battery pack, it gets about 117 miles of range on the very generous WLTC test program.Despite offering well in excess of 800 hp, the Tank takes 5.6 seconds to get from zero to 62 miles per hour. That's not much quicker than a real tank, and it's more than a second slower than aMercedes-AMG G63, which makes just 577 hp.What gives? GWM didn't give a weight figure, but this unit has to be supremely heavy. That's the only way to explain the abysmal range, too. A Hyundai Ioniq 5 with AWD and the small 58 kWh battery pack delivers 224 miles of range on the stricter WLTP test, for a better idea of what this much charge should deliver.Even without supercar speed, the new Tank wants to look fast. Every version now gets a healthy dose of ground effects, including new bumpers and wider side skirts. But if the Tank 700 can't deliver supercar performance, does it at least match the G63's luxury experience? Massage Seats, Night Vision, And A Freezer That Actually Freezes GWM Tank 700 HiZ-4 (9)It's extremely luxurious on the inside, or at least very well-equipped. The Tank offers reclining, heated, and cooled rear seats with Nappa leather and massage. The center console cooler has its own compressor and can chill to as low as 21°F or warm to 122°F. The front seats will even recline to a flat 180 degrees, and GWM shows the front and rear seats combined to make a double bed.Other extras include a large roof-mounted screen for the rear seat passengers and an extensive driver assistance suite. A 21-speaker audio system comes with 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and 2,400 watts of power. The Tank 700 even offers night vision to help you spot pedestrians, animals, and obstacles in the dark. The one thing missing from the Tank 700 Hi4-Z versus the G is locking differentials. Because the front and rear aren't connected (the engine drives the fronts and the rear motor the rears), you can't really add one in the center. Electric traction control should negate the need for one in the front and rear axles. If you want something more rugged, GWM will sell you the Tank 700 Hi4-T. That one gets the V6 driveline mentioned up top, and it has a nine-speed automatic and 4x4 with three mechanical locking differentials. It even has an electronic sway bar disconnect. The starting price for the new Tank 700 is 428,000 yuan, or around $63,000. That's just one-sixth the price of a G63 in China.GWM Tank 700 HiZ-4 (2)
