A computer survey in the UK analyzed selfies people took with their cars, determined whether those people were smiling, and used the data to come up with the top 25 cars that make people smile. The software analyzes facial attributes of the person in each selfie and returns a confidence score for each attribute.Maybe the definition of happy is different in the UK.Once you see this list you’ll be howling with outrage because your car is probably not on it. And most of the cars that are on the list just don’t make sense.Autotrader in the UK wanted to know which cars make people smile the most. That was their stated goal, the smile. They weren’t looking at which cars were the most fun to drive, which ones gave the most bang for the buck, or which ones were best at attracting a potential mate, any one of which topics would at least hold up better in the court of public comments than this survey.Yet it was all done very scientifically, if you ever had to take statistics.Porsche Brand Ambassadors Maria Sharapova and Mark Webber take a selfie with 911 RT2 RS at Weissach.“We analyzed 47,000 Instagram selfies tagged with car brand hashtags,” Autotrader said. “Only brands with 100+ selfies were included. Images related to competition entries were excluded. Facial expressions were measured using AWS Rekognition software to determine an average happiness score per brand.”AWS stands for Amazon Web Services.“Amazon Rekognition provides you with APIs (Application Programming Interface) you can use to detect and analyze faces in images and videos. When a face is detected, the system analyzes facial attributes and returns a confidence score for each attribute.”So which car brand made the most people smile when they took a selfie with it? Smart, with a “Happiness Score” of 88.65 out of 100. Yes, the little two-seater rolling dorm-room fridge of a car makes people happier than anything else. At least according to the survey. For the record, Daimler stopped selling the Smart car in the US in 2019. Maybe that’s why people are happy. Chevy did not make the list.Second place went to Volkswagen with 87.73, which you might agree with, given the GTI and Golf R. Cadillac was third at 77.83, which also makes sense if you consider the CT4-V and CT5-V.Then: Audi, Toyota (Gazoo Racing!), Subaru (BRZ?), Jeep (okay), Bentley (good), Volvo (???), and Tesla, the latter which comes in at 10 with a Happiness Score of 58.09.The list goes on all the way down to 25, which was where Lexus landed with a score of 29.28. Lamborghini was only 21, behind Fiat at 20.
