Era 5S began presales in China as the brand’s first sedan that can steer for you on urban roads and highways. This plug-in hybrid model starts at 115,900 yuan (17,175 USD). It is available with four trim levels. The ID. Era is a line of new energy vehicles (BEV+PHEV+EREV) under the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture. It currently includes the ID. Era 5S The Volkswagen ID. Era 5S is a sleek sedan that adopts the brand’s latest design language. It adopts split headlights, semi-hidden door handles, an active air intake, a sleek roofline, and a continuous taillight unit. The car’s dimensions are 4836/1880/1505 mm. The wheelbase is 2,766 mm. For clarity, it is 76 mm shorter, 31 mm wider, and 24 mm higher than the Skoda Superb. Three wheel options are available for the 5S: 17-inch, 18-inch, and 19-inch. The car also offers a sunroof. Customers can choose from five body shades: gold, green, gray, black, and white. The vehicle reportedly adopts 15 aerodynamic features, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.247 Cd. Era 5S The car’s interior adopts minimalistic styling with a few physical buttons, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster, and a two-spoke steering wheel. This infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink. The gear shifter sits on the steering column, leaving space for a wireless phone charger, two cup holders, and a hidden compartment in the center tunnel. The Volkswagen ID. Era 5S’s front seats boast heating, ventilation, and 10-point massage functions. These seats can fold flat, creating a “two-bed” configuration, similar to the Jetta M6 EV. Era 5S became the brand’s first sedan equipped with the Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) feature. It means the car can drive from address to address autonomously. However, the driver must monitor the situation all the time, as it is still the L2 assisted driving system with partial automation. It is also capable of automatic parking, remote parking, and cross-floor memory parking. This model supports the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) function at 140 km/h. The car’s assisted driving system was developed by SAIC-Volkswagen, Carizon, and Horizon Robotics. The Volkswagen ID. Era 5S’ body comprises 86% of high-strength steel (with 30% hot-formed steel). It has seven airbags. The car’s powertrain adopts a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine for 80 kW (107 hp) and a one-speed DHT transmission with an electric motor for 130 kW (174 hp). The system’s total output is unknown. A 19.1 kWh LFP battery powers this combination, suitable for 160 km of EV range under CLTC conditions.
