Typical new vehicles cost more than they did a year ago, while the average EV sold for less, narrowing a hurdle that has long kept many buyers from battery-powered models. Here's what to knowAccording to the Kelley Blue Book report, as InsideEVs highlighted, the average transaction price for a new EV was $54,813 in August, down 2.7% from a year earlier and 1.2% from July. Over the same period, the average new vehicle sold for $50,089, up 1.9% year over year.AdvertisementAdvertisementSo, EVs still carried a premium in August — $4,724 above the marketwide average for new vehicles.Manufacturers did not need to spend more on deals to get there. In August, EV incentives — including cash rebates, cheap leases, and special financing — equaled 12% of transaction prices, down from 14.6% a year earlier. Using the average sale price, that amounts to about $6,600 per vehicle.Even after that pullback, electric vehicle incentives are still roughly twice what buyers usually find in the overall new-car market.More backgroundAmong major segments, compact cars posted a 2.9% annual price increase, while subcompact SUVs were up 2.2%.AdvertisementAdvertisementMidsize SUVs moved past compact SUVs to become the top-selling segment, and that tilt helped lift the market's average transaction price.Tesla was a big contributor to the decline in EV averages. Transaction prices, rebates, financing offers, and expected fuel and maintenance costs can vary widely.AdvertisementAdvertisementSome brands are still offering aggressive deals. InsideEVs reported that Lucid is giving $10,000 off 2026 Gravity SUVs from inventory and adding 0% financing.Pre-owned electric models can offer many of the same benefits — including low fueling and maintenance costs — at lower entry prices.Electric vehicles remain expensive, but they are moving closer to the average price of a new vehicle.Where can I learn more?Falling EV transaction prices are only one part of the affordability picture.
