Soon after, Toyota was established, but America was always the benchmark, and in 1945, Kiichiro urged his people to catch up to the rapidly growing American car industry. Eiji also struck a deal with General Motors in the 80s to build the joint-venture manufacturing plant (NUMMI) in Fremont, California. He was an industrial engineer who, along with Eiji, saw the need to streamline and scale up the brand's production. Ohno is said to have been inspired by American Supermarkets to help build the process for the Toyota Production System (TPS).The Modern AgeIn 1985, Shoichiro Toyoda (Akio's father) established the first fully owned Toyota manufacturing plant in the United States. It all started in Georgetown, Kentucky, with the Camry, and three years later, the Corolla would establish a base in Cambridge, Ontario.
