Continuing our look at the road transport department’s (JPJ) registration data for February 2026, we can see that Perodua is once again Malaysia’s best-selling car brand. Despite a shorter month punctuated by festive periods leading to a mild sales decline, Proton’s sharp drop meant the market leader enjoyed a healthier margin over its rival, to the tune of more than 10,000 units. Overall, the company registered 23,575 vehicles last month, a reduction of just 2,553 units (or 9.8%) over January, buoyed by continuing strong demand for the Bezza, Axia and Myvi. Contrast this to Proton, sales of which fell by 6,303 units (-31.9%!) to 13,447 units, from a 15-year high of 19,750 the previous month. As a result, Perodua’s year-to-date lead has widened to 16,506 units, having sold a combined 49,703 vehicles versus Proton’s 33,197. While the national carmakers are going at it hammer and tongs, it’s a lonely third for Toyota as best of the non-nationals. The world’s largest carmaker registered 6,993 units last month, which is actually an increase of 395 over January. There is, of course, the usual caveat that a significant portion of Toyota registrations come from recon vehicles rather than those from official channels. Behind it, Honda also saw an increase of 202 units to 3,379, while Chery held on to fifth in the standings with 938 units (-349 units). Hot on its tail were Omoda & Jaecoo (901 units registered, down 386 units) and Mitsubishi (889 units, down 302 units), while Mercedes-Benz (659 units), Isuzu (527 units) and BYD (469 units) completed the top ten. No surprises across the rest of the table, with BMW just missing out on the top ten (449 units), Jetour slumping to 15th (297 units) from a high of 11th in January, and mostly EV-only brands such as iCaur (16th, 294 units), MG (17th, 279 units) and Zeekr (20th, 191 units) continuing to do well as they sell off their remaining 2025 stock, albeit to a lesser degree.
