REV'IT! and Zero Join Forces On "Electric Motorcycle Riding Gear"Charging remains very dumb. Wars between charging brands is how we fix that.If you've ever used public EV charging, you'll undoubtedly know that it's just still not as good of an experience as a gas station is. Nor is the electricity as cheap as you'd expect. The process tends to require an app, which requires a login, which requires an account, which requires you tying your credit card to, which requires you to give a company all your personal information, which they'll then sell to other companies to make bank off of. Then, once you find your way through the endless screens, prompts, and rabbit holes of information and needed clicks, you'll likely find your vehicle charging at a slower speed with higher prices. Still cheaper than gas, mind you, but not as cheap as you'd want—I recall a Rivian charge-up that cost me nearly as much as a full tank of gas. AdvertisementAdvertisementSuffice it to say, the process still sucks and is a large part of why EV adoption has stalled. So when our siblings over at InsideEVs started talking up the ongoing price war with Walmart and Ionna for public fast charging, my first reaction was, "Good. Now keep going and make the whole process easier."EVs Can Be CoolYou Can Get Up to $4,000 Off a Can-Am EV Motorcycle Right Now. Then, they had to get more reliable and more common. Now, they can start to get cheaper," says InsideEVs' Editor-in-Chief Mack Hogan, adding, "Ionna and Walmart appear to be leading the charge."According to the outlet, Walmart and Ionna are not only both expanding their individual fast charging options across the country, but the two have begun offering loyalty discounts and price slashes for customers within their own ecosystems. For Walmart customers, those with Walmart+, they'll be able to access the newly installed ultra fast charging stations, along with a 10% discount, and Ionna has been pushing new station and holiday pricing that undercuts a lot of the other chargers, including Tesla's, EVGo, and Electrify America. AdvertisementAdvertisementBasically, they're pulling the same type of price wars that you'd see from your local gas stations that mirror each other across the street. But that's just not enough, honestly. My biggest complaint, and it's one I've heard echoed too many times to recall, is that the actual charging station experience is a huge hurdle. The fact that you can't just roll up to a station, swipe your credit card, and start charging is just plain ridiculous. Charging stations, in their want for your data, took a working, understandable process—the gas pump—and made it worse. That's not how you convert skeptics and non-believers. It's how you turn them completely against you. And for powersports folks, the EV motorcyclists, this is far worse, as the need for easy-access electricity is more important due to limited range. So while I applaud these companies with starting with price wars, let's take that next logical step and make the experience stupid simple.
