These Are the World's Two Most Modified Cars by FarFord Motor CompanyWhen it comes to modifying your car, hot rodding it, souping it up as they used to say in ancient times, there are two models that park wheel and fender above all the rest. Can you guess which two?No, it's not the Toyota Camry/Corolla. Not even the Honda anything; Honda was way down at number nine on the list of manufacturers whose cars had mods. No, numbers one and two were… drum roll…"The study reveals that Ford dominates project car discussions as the most popular modified make, and Chevrolet came in close second, with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro being the two most popular makes for project car enthusiasts," said a spokesperson for the study.AdvertisementAdvertisementMustang/Camaro… and the Camaro isn't even being made any more! Mind you, these are global figures, so there's no East German Trabant or Chinese Wuling Hongguang on the list anywhere. How'd they get that list? A company called Accu, maker and purveyor of precision fasteners and components, analyzed over 197,000 Reddit posts and 2.31 million comments to find out which were the most modded cars in the world, ranked by frequency of discussion.Further definitions:"A project car is a car bought with the intent to restore or modify over time. Instead of being a daily driver, it serves as an ongoing hobby where the owner spends time and money on new parts, modifications and restorations."AdvertisementAdvertisement(Which is not to say that you'd have to spend time and money on new parts, hahaha)The study revealed that Ford dominates project car discussions as the most popular modified make, with 2,423 total mentions across the analyzed Reddit posts, which is 16.39% of all mentions of any car make or model.Chevrolet came in close second as another dominant project car make, taking up 16.06% of online discussion with 2,374 mentions across Reddit. Both American car makes are by far the most popular among project car enthusiasts, with a drop of almost 11% for Toyota in third place.10 Most Popular Project Car MakesHearst OwnedToyota ranked third among the most popular project car makes, receiving 839 mentions across the analyzed Reddit discussions, making up 5.68% of all discussions around project cars.AdvertisementAdvertisementPontiac followed in fourth place with 631 mentions, accounting for 4.27% of the total. Despite the last Pontiac—a fleet-spec G6—rolling off the Orion Assembly line in 2010, the brand remains a popular choice among project car enthusiasts.BMWBMW placed fifth overall, mentioned 615 times across Reddit discussions, Accu analyists said, representing 4.16% of total mentions. The Bavarian manufacturer continues to be a popular option for enthusiasts undertaking restoration and modification projects. While Toyota, Pontiac, and BMW all feature prominently in project car discussions, each records less than a third of the mentions achieved by Ford and Chevrolet, the study says, highlighting the dominance of the two American manufacturers within the project car community."Ford and Chevrolet's dominance in this data isn't simply a reflection of brand popularity, but a direct consequence of real engineering decisions made decades ago," said Patrick Faulkner, Lead Engineer at Accu. "Both manufacturers built their performance platforms around long production runs, shared component architecture across model years, and an open ecosystem that made aftermarket development commercially viable for thousands of indie manufacturers.AdvertisementAdvertisement"When you're sourcing components for a restoration or a performance build, parts availability and dimensional consistency matter enormously, and both brands have historically delivered on that."But what about Japanese manufacturers and The Fast & The Furious?"The sharp drop from Chevrolet to Toyota in third place is also telling," said Faulkner. "Japanese manufacturers have built their reputations on precision and reliability, but that same engineering tightness can make modification more demanding."That creates a different kind of project car culture around those platforms rather than a lesser one, but it does explain why the community skews heavily towards American iron at the top of the rankings."AdvertisementAdvertisementBreaking it down further to the Most Common Project Car Models, the team at Accu also analyzed the Reddit data to discover which car models of the most popular makes were the most modified by car enthusiasts. The Ford Mustang was the most popular project car, with a total of 683 mentions—that's 6.94% of all mentions—and the Chevrolet Camaro was found to be the second-most popular project car model with 399 total mentions or 4.06% of total car model discussion.Chevrolet also took third place with the Corvette, having 2.35% of total discussion and 231 mentions.10 Most Popular Project Car ModelsHearst OwnedAmerican muscle cars dominate project cars discussions, with seven of the top 10 being this kind of model, suggesting that classic American performance and muscle cars remain the backbone of enthusiast restoration communities, the Accu study says.AdvertisementAdvertisement"The Mustang's position at the top is no accident," said Faulkner. "It has one of the longest continuous production histories of any performance car, which means a builder working on a 1968 fastback and one working on a Fox-body from the 1980s are drawing from overlapping parts pools and shared community knowledge. That accumulated ecosystem is enormously valuable when you are mid-project and need to solve a problem quickly."Miata's popular even in right-hand drive.ElectrogenicAnd don't forget the Miata."What's more interesting in this data is the presence of the Mazda Miata alongside the American muscle models," said Faulkner. "The Miata was engineered from the outset with a level of mechanical balance that makes it genuinely rewarding to work with. The double wishbone suspension geometry and the near-perfect weight distribution were deliberate design choices that translate directly into a platform that begs for modification."Same for two other Japanese-made street heroes.AdvertisementAdvertisement"The same can be said for the Nissan 300ZX and the Toyota Supra. The fact that these models hold their own against vehicles with far larger production volumes speaks to the quality of the engineering underneath them."Does this information jibe with your take on project cars?
