The track-focused NISMO model can now also be optioned with a manual transmission. Other than that, the coupe stays mostly the same.Meant more for touring than track daysThe Z comes fitted with a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 under the hood, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. The NISMO variant gets a power bump to 420-horsepower, but it also comes with a much heftier price tag. While quick off the line and fun to drive, we think that the Z struggles at the limit. It deserves more than a second look, with it offering a sweet mix of performance and luxury. While the M240i sits just out of our price range, the four-cylinder 230i is still fantastic, and more mature than a lot of other options at the same price point.Composed in a very German wayThe 230i comes equipped with BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the German brand's rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system is optional. It might not be the quickest option, but it still gets up to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 5.1 seconds. Performance is effortless, with it eating up twisty back roads without breaking a sweat. That does also mean that it isn't quite as engaging to drive as some other options, though.2026 Honda PreludeStarting MSRP: $42,000We think that Honda has made a pretty big misstep with the Prelude. When they announced that they were bringing the nameplate back, we were hoping for a real competitor to go up against the likes of the Mazda MX-5 and Toyota GR86. Instead, they've chopped the back doors off of a Civic Hybrid, added a few unique aesthetic elements, and given it a price that we think is incredibly hard to justify.More focused on efficiency than anything elseIn the Prelude sits a similar powertrain to the one that you get in the Civic Hybrid. It sends 200 horsepower to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. The CVT is capable of imitating a traditional automatic, which you can shift via paddles. While decently fun to drive, and very efficient, we don't think that Honda has given us enough to justify the more than $10,000 jump in price over the Civic Hybrid.2026 Subaru BRZStarting MSRP: $35,860AdvertisementAdvertisementThe BRZ was codeveloped with Toyota, and exists as an alternative to the Toyota GR86. It starts quite a bit more expensive than its sibling from Toyota, with Subaru essentially throwing more equipment in their base model. At its core, it aims to be a car that puts the driving experience first, and we think that it achieves that goal expertly.Pure and mechanical driving at its bestIn classic Subaru fashion, the BRZ comes equipped with a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. It is naturally aspirated, asking you to rev all the way up to the redline to get the most out of it. It comes standard with a six-speed manual, but a six-speed automatic is optional, though we think an auto goes against the car's identity.2026 Ford MustangStarting MSRP: $33,490American muscle cars used to be one-trick ponies, accelerating fast but feeling heavy and slow through corners. The current iteration of the Mustang proves how far we've come from that stereotype. The four-cylinder Ecoboost models are pretty cheap, and extremely underrated. If you think a Mustang without a V-8 is sacrilege, though, the GT models stick to our budget, starting at $47,795. We just wish that Ford would fix its numb steering.More nimble than muscle cars of yoreThe Ecoboost Mustang is an overachiever for the money, putting down 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a slick shifting 10-speed automatic, and can get up to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. Upgrade to the GT, though, and you get a roaring 480-horsepower V-8 and the choice of a manual transmission.2026 Toyota GR86Starting MSRP: $31,400As mentioned earlier, the GR86 was designed alongside the Subaru BRZ. Mechanically, they are super similar sports cars, but there are some nuances that set them apart from one another. One such nuance is that Toyota offers a more affordable base model, undercutting the Subaru by a couple of thousand dollars.The sharper of two siblingsAside from the different badge and front fascia, the BRZ and the GR86 are incredibly similar. They come with the same four-cylinder engine under the hood, sending power to the rear via a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. In terms of driving dynamics, the Toyota does feel like the slightly sharper of the two, meaning a stiffer suspension setup and steering feel, making it slightly better suited for spirited driving.2026 Mazda MX-5 MiataStarting MSRP: $30,430In the world of affordable sports cars, the Mazda MX-5 has been considered king for just about as long as it has been around. Like a fine wine, we think that it has only gotten better with age, with the current iteration being the sharpest and most complete version yet. Despite it only making 181 horsepower, it is capable of getting up to 60 miles per hour in as little as 5.4 seconds. This is thanks to the fact that it is incredibly light, weighing 2,341 pounds if you stick with the soft-top roof.
