Getty Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is one of the best, if not the best, movies in the Batman franchise. What is a fact, however, is that the Batmobile created for the 1992 film is the most noteworthy of the superhero’s garage—which arguably contains many cool machines. Now, the very creation used in the movie’s driving sequences is going up for auction. The price estimate? Not cheap. Julien’s Auctions will offer the bespoke machine on November 23, and it’s expected to bring in about $5,000,000 to $7,000,000. If accurate, it will break the record for an on-screen-used Batmobile, set by the O.G., a George Barris-built 1966 Batmobile that sold for $4.2 million in 2013. Julien’s Auctions The batty coupe sits on two Impala chassis put together and is powered by a Chevrolet V8 and a three-speed automatic transmission. The outrageous fiberglass bodywork was all done by hand and, judging by the photos, is in great shape. The machine measures over 19 feet long, and its gothic styling (see what I did there?) has turned it into one of the most recognizable and famous movie cars ever. If you recall, Bruce Wayne’s cruiser was equipped with rockets, smoke grenades, body armor, and these arms that extended out the sides to trip bad guys. I think that last one is my favorite trick. It even had a sort of central air-jack that could hoist the car up at the center and rotate it 180 degrees. Since making its on-screen debut, the car has reportedly been on display a couple of times, most recently at the Marconi Automotive Museum. That said, it’s spent most of its years secured in storage. Perhaps its next owner will park it in their living room or movie memorabilia room and admire it. That’s what I would do.
