In a media statement, Hyderabad City Police said that it has allocated seven of its 15 new electric cars to Spandana, the city’s new women-only first responder system dedicated to the safety of women and children. The remaining eight units serve regular patrolling duties in the city. C. V. Anand, Telangana’s Director General of Police (DGP), flagged off these electric police cars at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) headquarters on 29 October.
Hyderabad City Police did not say whether its fleet of Punch.ev features any modifications other than the special livery. It did reveal that, of the two power-electric variants Tata Motors offers, namely 30 and 40, it chose the latter, which is more powerful and offers a longer range. The Punch.ev 40 has a single, front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 95 kW and 154 Nm of torque.
A 40 kWh LFP battery pack powers the 95 kW motor, and it delivers a range of 468 kilometres, as per the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). According to an internal ‘C75’ test cycle, though, Tata Motors expects the real-world range to be approximately 335 to 355 kilometres. Charging the 40 kWh LFP battery pack from 10 per cent to 80 per cent SoC via a DC fast charger takes about 30 minutes.
Tata Motors offers the Punch.ev in Smart, Smart+, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+ trims. Hyderabad City Police specified its fleet in the Smart+ equipment line, which comes with three drive modes: Eco, City, and Sport, and also paddle shifters to adjust regenerative braking. The Punch.ev Smart+ 40 also features 16-inch steel wheels with black covers, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an automatic climate control system, 65-watt USB Type-C ports, and a rear-view camera system.
The Punch.ev’s retail prices start at 979,000 rupees (approx. €9,200 euros) and go up to 1.299 million rupees (approx. €12,200 euros). The Smart+ 40 configuration that Hyderabad City Police chose for its fleet costs 1.119 million rupees (approx. €10,500 euros).
