I've long been a fan, admiring her boldness to learn new things, to test the untested, to not just embrace cars but embrace supercars.Alex makes it look easy, but she tells us, even life in the refined world of supercars has its bumps. She has faced what many of us have, the cruel, misogynistic comments, the doubt of others, the self doubt. I've been a fan for a long time, have been watching you for a long time. And I my first question for you is how the heck did you become Supercar Blondie? Tell us about your journey.Alex Thank you so much. It's nice to meet you too, Scotty. I was a radio presenter and because I was a journalist, I was able to get press cars and I had no idea what a press car was back then. You know, I don't think many people even do. And so I was given a press car for the first time. It was a Bentley, and my eyes were just like, everything lit up inside me. I was like, what is this? This is amazing. I drove it around for a few days.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd then I wanted more of that experience in my life. So I just went knocking on doors. I went to Ferrari. I went to McLaren. And I'm like, hey, do you guys have this thing called a press car? And they're like, Yeah. Can I have one, please? And so, and so because they knew me from my radio show, that's kind of how it all started. I just started filming cars and putting my personal experience just as a layman, just as your next door neighbor, getting the handed the keys to the most incredible cars. What do I think of it? How does it feel? And it just went from there.Scotty And so why supercars? I mean, I know that you grew up, you've always been a car enthusiast, you've always liked cars. What is it about supercars though that really attracted you?Alex You know, people always ask me, why cars? And it's not really about cars, it's about driving. It always all all started from the feeling of driving. And, you know, my first car was like a just a like a little banged up Mitsubishi Lancer. And I didn't care. I just loved the feeling of driving the car. And, you know, it would be an experience for me. It wouldn't be go getting from A to B. It would be the shifting, down shifting, the experience of getting to know a car and how to drive it in the best way. And so I think when you love to drive, you seek out the best driving experiences. And what are the best driving experiences? Supercars, hypercars. They give you that incredible rush, that incredible feel of years and years and years of expertise and knowledge going into these cars. And so if you want the best driving experience, it's with those cars. So that's what I sought out.Scotty So I'm totally with you and and you know, my little Miata, my fun little cars, those little beaters are the ones that make you fall in love with driving. Because you have to be more involved. You have to be really think like the machine to a certain degree.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlex Yeah, exactly, you do. And you know, sometimes it's like I I don't feel like working today and you're like, Okay, cool. I guess we're not going anywhere today, you know. So they all have a little bit of personality and I like it. You kind of bond with the with the car.Scotty Yeah. Well it also teaches you some reliability, being self reliant. Because because, you know, you would hear something happening. There's some engine noise, but nothing's happening here. We're getting nowhere, you know? So that was my one big frustration was going through life. I went through a lot of like rental cars when I was a journalist. and a lot of them just couldn't get off the lights fast enough and that was my one big pet peeve, you know. If if I didn't win at the lights, I was not in a good mood.Scotty I'm so with you. I drive an EV and that's my favorite thing is taking off at a light and looking in my rearview mirror and seeing everybody else still sitting there.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlex Yeah. Exactly. Love that. I am with you on that a hundred percent.Scotty It is so good. So let me ask you this. When you were a kid, were you a Hot Wheels girlie?Alex I have an older brother and he was he was a Hot Wheels boy. And so he was also super into Lego. So I used to go and rummage around his toy bin. You know, you all your toys go in this one big stack. And so I would go in there and rummage around and play with his Lego and I would also find the little mini cars and stuff. So I would play with them. But I personally didn't have any. It just wasn't I suppose it wasn't really a thing growing up then that girls got given mini cars. But that's changing now, which I love.Scotty I love that too. And I love seeing you as a Hot Wheels ambassador. They're calling you a challenge leader, for the Challenge Accepted campaign that is coming up. So tell us a little bit about that.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlex I think what's what really aligns really well for me and this campaign — it is all about accepting new challenges, moving forward with something in your life constantly. You know, if you get if you get too comfortable, you know you're not growing, you're not learning. And I think that's been a huge part of why I am where I am.I've always done things that scare me. And sometimes I'm like, I just don't want to do this. I just want one day where I'm not scared, I'm not stressed out, you know, I'm not thinking, how am I gonna do this? Where am I going? But because I've constantly pushed that boundary and gone into new challenges, like building new businesses, not knowing where it's gonna go, you know, getting on new platforms, I think that's a huge part of why I am where I am. And so I think it's it's really it's really a beautiful thing that they've seen that about me and that they want me to have a mini car that might be part of the next generation's childhood, which I think is that's kind of a wow moment.Scotty It is a wow moment and I think there's a wow moment for a lot of girls out there who now can have your first car as a part of the Hot Wheels collection, correct?Alex Yeah, and I wanted it to be my first ever supercar because for me that was such a moment. That was always a goal for me. I wanted to own a supercar one day. I didn't know how I was gonna do it, didn't know how I was gonna achieve it. But when I had the means to be able to buy a Lamborghini for the first time, I was just like, my god, I've done it. I've done it.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd so I went to town with the design. I had a team of guys working on every single little flower. It took weeks and weeks and and I created something unique. And so I wanted my f Hot Wheels car to be my first ever supercar because it meant so much to me.Scotty What did you name her?Alex Her name was Lucy.Scotty Lucy Lamborghini. And so talk a little bit about your design journey with your Lamborghini. What was important to you? So I would do like a, you know, leather jacket with like a a pretty corset underneath, for example. I like that combination. And so I wanted to do that on my car. So I thought flowers, beautiful. I love flowers. I love having fresh flowers around the house whenever I can. it just makes me feel good.AdvertisementAdvertisementSo I wanted to do flowers, but then I wanted to offset that with something a little bit more masculine. So there are like straight lines going down the the center of the car as well. And the other masculine part is like the more traditional masculine colours of blue and black. So that was the combination I wanted was that kind of masculine and feminine combined.Scotty A little leather and lace. I like that! It's so good.Alex Yeah, exactly. Leather and lace.Scotty So let's go back to talking about supercars. You had said that, you know, the engineering, the history, the the exact precision that goes into supercars. They're and it's daunting and they can be they can be very intimidating, but they can also be surprising. Talk about what surprises you about supercars, especially as you started to drive them.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlex I think where people go drastically wrong is they assume that they can handle suddenly 600 horsepower when they've never had anywhere close to it before. You see people renting a Lamborghini for the first time and they just go they just go for it. They don't even allow themselves to get used to what 600 horsepower feels like because it's a lot.And so you see people just crash into walls, and they're just you cannot tame that kind of horsepower. You really need to take it carefully. And so I think what surprised me when I first would was driving these cars is wow, now I understand why people always talk about horsepower, because it makes a huge difference. You know, you would really have to be careful if you put your foot down.Suddenly that car, that car is going where it wants to go. If you don't know how to control it, you're done. So I think that that's what really surprised me was just how powerful these cars can be. And, you know, coming from my background, I didn't grow up with supercars. I didn't have experience with them. So I think a lot of people who have never driven one just have no idea just how powerful they are and how having that much power in your hands is such a big responsibility as well on the road.Scotty I was just gonna say responsibility. It really is a huge responsibility. So thinking about kind of the other side of that coin, what delights you? What do you really love about supercars?AdvertisementAdvertisementAlex I love the design. You know, there's a lot of engineering that goes into obviously the the power and and and how the how the car feels to drive. But my other my other love for supercars is in the design. I mean there is also an equal amount of energy and thought and experience that goes into designing these cars and making them look so incredible. So for me to sit in a car that has details that have been worked on for weeks, just one little detail just to make it look a certain way. I love that. And I appreciate the time and the energy that has gone into creating that one little detail. You know, there was a there was a I was at Pebble Beach, and you know, just the little lock door button that you push down, that took them, that took them three weeks.You know, to design and and print that specific design on it and make sure it was perfect. So every single little detail in this car has taken hours of thought.Scotty It really is incredible. And the imagery and the legacy and the the heritage that goes into everything every supercar maker does is pretty impressive.Alex Yeah. And you know, like how do you keep that heritage, because you always want someone to look at a car and go, 'that's a Lamborghini or that's a Maserati.' You need to keep that kind of design language as you go. But how do you keep turning up the dial and making it true to the brand, but also cooler and cooler and cooler? It's it's a difficult, difficult job.Scotty And making us want them. Creating that desire. So I have one last question because I know we're running out of time. What do you want women, especially girls, to take away from you and what you do in your career?Alex I thought that being in a male-dominated world, like you are as well, I'm sure, would be an issue. Honestly, it really didn't even it didn't even cross my mind when I started filming cars. And then it really shocked me that there were a lot of men that were still wanting to keep us in a box. Like comments like get back to the kitchen. I mean, I thought that was, you know, I thought that comment we'd left that in the 90s, you know.Robert Lewandowski, Maluma and Supercar Blondie with their cars in the Hot Wheels 'Challenge Accepted' campaignAnd apparently we haven't. So I just I kept pushing forward, but I think it was it was a hard road. It will be hard for any women who still want to go into it now, although it's getting easier and easier. It still is hard. Expect it to be hard and be okay with that. And and just tough your way through it. It's not gonna be easy. And that's just what it is. But keep showing up because the more you show up the more other women will show up, the more we'll all feel comfortable and then the more we'll all be accepted and then it just won't be a thing anymore.Scotty The rising tide lifts all boats. We all need to be there. And you said it best, and I hope that Hot Wheels is listening. We need more cars for girls.Alex You said it best. Or maybe you're next, girlie.
