The overlanding world has a habit of turning everything into a size contest. Bigger tires. Bigger campers. Bigger fuel tanks. Before long, you've built something that can cross continents but barely squeeze through a grocery store parking lot.Storyteller Overland seems to have noticed. While unveiling its largest lineup to date, the Alabama-based builder quietly introduced what may be its smartest new adventure rig: the GXV WILD. It isn't the biggest vehicle in the catalog. It isn't the fanciest either. But it might be the one most people would actually want to drive off the pavement. That's saying something considering Storyteller's 2027 family now spans nine adventure vehicles, including updated MODE vans and several expedition trucks. The company also claims business is moving in the right direction. Through May 2026, its Class B sales climbed 51.7% while the overall segment slipped 7.8%, helping Storyteller reach fifth place among Class B manufacturers in the U.S.So yes, the company has plenty to celebrate. The new kid isn't trying to be the biggestThe GXV WILD skips the "go bigger or go home" philosophy.Instead, Storyteller built it on a Ram 3500 single-cab chassis powered by a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter HEMI V8. The result is a noticeably shorter expedition truck aimed at buyers who want real off-road capability without feeling like they're driving a luxury apartment through the woods. Its compact dimensions should make it considerably easier to thread between trees, negotiate tight switchbacks, or simply fit into places where some expedition trucks become rolling roadblocks. Then there's the feature everyone will probably remember.AdvertisementAdvertisementStoryteller gave the GXV WILD a FlipOut Rear Deck that swings open the entire rear section of the camper. Instead of staring out through a tiny rear door, owners can transform the back wall into a massive indoor-outdoor living area. It almost feels like someone looked at a traditional camper and said, "What if we just… opened the whole thing?"That's the kind of idea that sticks. There's plenty more than just the WILDThe WILD isn't the only newcomer. Storyteller also introduced the TOUR MODE, a longer 170-inch van aimed at travelers who prioritize comfort without giving up off-road ability. Meanwhile, the Grand Bohemian officially joins the regular lineup after its debut earlier this year, giving buyers an INEOS Grenadier-based micro-camper that blends daily usability with genuine overlanding credentials. If that name sounds familiar, we recently took a closer look at how Storyteller transformed the rugged British SUV into one of the most interesting compact campers on sale. The rest of the lineup also gets meaningful updates. The 144-inch CLASSIC, DARK, and BEAST MODE vans receive redesigned kitchens with more usable counter space, taller refrigerators, quieter interiors, and an improved Groove Lounge that doubles as seating and a bed. Buyers opting for the BEAST, DARK, TOUR, or CREW MODE also get Starlink Mini as standard equipment, making it easier to stay connected even when civilization is little more than a dot in the rearview mirror. Those upgrades should help Storyteller remain competitive in a segment that also includes popular adventure vans like the Winnebago Revel, although the company's focus continues to lean more heavily toward serious overlanding than traditional camper van travel. At the opposite end of the spectrum sits the GXV EPIC, a Kenworth-based expedition truck that makes the WILD look almost modest. With a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, a 200-gallon fuel tank, washer, dryer, full bathroom, and more than 300 square feet of living space, it's less "weekend getaway" and more "see you next season."Bigger isn't always betterAdvertisementAdvertisementThe irony of Storyteller's biggest product announcement is that the most compelling vehicle isn't its largest one. It's the truck that seems to understand what many adventure travelers eventually learn: getting farther often depends on being able to fit where everyone else can't.And if the GXV WILD delivers on that promise, it may end up stealing the spotlight from every other vehicle Storyteller unveiled this week. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Aug 4, 2026, where it first appeared in the Gear section.
