The Range Rover Electric Looks Almost NormalLand RoverDespite some of their shortcomings, electric powertrains make for a nice fit in luxury-focused automotive products, and Land Rover's Range Rover certainly fits that description. Now, more than 55 years after creating the fancy SUV segment back in 1970, Range Rover is finally ready to show off its first battery-powered offering: the 2027 Range Rover Electric.You would be forgiven for thinking that these images highlight a gas-powered Range Rover, but trust me, that's not the case. The automaker went out of its way to ensure that the new BEV looks almost identical to its internal-combustion siblings, with only a few aero-based adjustments to the grille, underfloor, and wheels. The minor tweaks mean this is one of the most handsome EV SUVs on offer; they also mean folks at the country club are less likely to call you an environmentalist the first time you roll up in one.Land RoverIn place of the traditional powertrain sits a new pair of electric motors, each of which are rated for 260 kilowatts. JLR says that the units pump out 20 percent more torque than competitively sized units, and feature key upgrades like silicon carbide semiconductors, combining for a total of 542 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. For reference, the current Range Rover SV produces 606 hp, but far less torque at just 553 lb-ft. Early automaker estimates place the 0-60-mile-per-hour sprint time in the 4.3-second range.AdvertisementAdvertisementThose twin motors are fed by a new double-stacked battery setup, consisting of 344 prismatic cells. Total capacity of the battery sits at 118.5 kWh, which the automaker says should provide 333 miles of range. Thanks to 800-volt electrical architecture and split-charging capabilities, the SUV can add as many as 125 miles of range in just 10 minutes, or charge from 10–80 percent in just 22 minutes.Land RoverOf course, every Range Rover needs to be able to do some off-roading. While JLR hasn't shared the full specifications of the SUV at this point, we do know a few of the highlights. The automaker says that the truck can wade through up to 35 inches of water, and monster its way up 45-degree slopes in one-pedal mode. The SUV is also bolstered by some new tech, including Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, which moves torque around the rear axle to prevent wheel slip. This works in conjunction with the revised traction control system that can control motor speeds within 50 milliseconds of detecting slip—which the brand claims is 100 times quicker than the system in gas-powered cars. We expect the same crazy air suspension setup and similar breadth of capability of the internal-combustion Range Rover will also find its way to the EV.Land RoverThe Range Rover Electric will be available in both short- and long-wheelbase variants, with a number of different trims to choose from. These include SE, Autobiography, SV, SV Black, and SV Ultra. Pictured above is the First Edition model, which features either Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue exterior paint; every First Edition model also receives a bespoke Light Cloud interior.Land RoverPricing for the SUV starts at $140,450 in the U.S., with the order books officially open. While that's a lot of cash, and a $22,700 premium over the 3.0-liter six-cylinder base model, the added capability (and ability to avoid gas stations) makes the difference almost seem reasonable.
