Quehenberger Logistics is one of the pioneers of fully electric freight transport in Austria: as early as 2018, the company was among the pilot customers for the MAN eTGM, a 26-tonne battery-electric truck for distribution transport, which was later produced in a small series.
Much has happened since then – and Quehenberger now holds the largest known electric mandate with the drugstore chain dm. After deploying the first three battery-electric trucks for the customer in 2024, Quehenberger has been serving around 100 dm stores in Vienna with ten electric trucks since spring.
By the end of the year, Quehenberger’s electric fleet is now set to grow further, though the company – based in Straßwalchen near Salzburg – has not disclosed which customers the new electric trucks are intended for. In any case, by the end of 2026, the number of electric trucks is to increase from 13 to 24 vehicles – including the expansion of the necessary charging infrastructure. According to the company, this will mean that 60 per cent of its Austrian fleet will be electrically powered in the future. After that, the electric fleet is to triple again within two years, with 50 additional electric trucks to be added.
“We are convinced that electric mobility is an essential part of the future of freight transport,” explained Christian Fürstaller, CEO of Quehenberger Logistics. “That is why we are consistently expanding our electric fleet and charging infrastructure.” The fact that Quehenberger received its first electric truck as early as 2018 is now paying off: “Because we’ve been involved from the very start, we understand the practical requirements. We pass this expertise directly on to our customers,” Fürstaller continued.
According to Quehenberger, the key to the successful deployment of electric trucks is to use them in a targeted and intelligent manner. They are particularly suitable for urban distribution, plannable routes, and areas of operation with optimal charging infrastructure.
“E-mobility in freight transport does not work on a ‘scattergun’ approach,” emphasised Andreas Letsch, Managing Director at Quehenberger Logistics. “The key lies in the precise analysis of operational profiles, strategic route planning and intelligent integration into existing logistics processes. This is precisely where our expertise lies.”
Quehenberger has not disclosed which electric truck models it currently uses or is procuring. However, it is known from the past that the company operates several Volvo FM Electric units. The current press image for this announcement (see above) also shows a Mercedes-Benz eActros 600.
