Next Porsche 911 GT3 Eyes Twin-Turbo Flat-SixAndrei Avarvarii - MotorTrendWhat It IsPorsche is already on the back side of the 992-generation 911, and at this point we're essentially down to the last of the special editions left on the schedule. That means a new day will soon dawn for the 911, and when it does, the last of its naturally aspirated Mohicans—the mighty 911 GT3—is finally going to have to give in to the realities of European emissions laws and accept turbocharging like the rest of the lineup. Yes, this also means that even the harder-core GT3 RS and Manthey (pronounced "man-tie") models will suffer the same fate given they all use the same engine.Why It MattersThe GT3 was the last of its kind, both among its peers and within Porsche. It and its naturally aspirated engine have formed the bedrock of the company's racing division for decades while simultaneously setting the benchmark for street-legal track capability. The GT3 hasn't had a significant increase in horsepower or torque in generations, yet the car continues to sit at or near the top of lap-record lists around the world.Porsche has protected the engine for as long as possible, throwing every technology available at it short of turbochargers and electric motors. Displacement has increased to 4.0 liters, a gasoline particulate filter has been added, and every race trick in the book has been worked into the rotating assembly, valvetrain, oiling and cooling systems, intake and exhaust, and everything else. European emissions laws continue to tighten, though, and there's nowhere else to go but to the turbocharger.Andrei Avarvarii - MotorTrendPlatform and PowertrainThe good news is that the move is nothing Porsche isn't already doing. The new GT3, which we expect to arrive sometime in 2029 as a 2030 model, will need all the turbo plumbing added, from intake to exhaust, oil coolers to intercoolers. All that stuff is already fitted to virtually every other 911 model, so it will be less a matter of reinventing the wheel and more about adapting and enhancing those components to GT3 standards.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe question is which turbo system it will adopt. It's tempting to assume Porsche will go for the most technologically advanced system—the hybridized single-turbo setup found in the GTS T-Hybrid—but we wouldn't bet on it. The GT3 is the direct link to Porsche's sports car racing program, and the T-Hybrid would introduce a lot of complexity and weight, neither of which is desirable in racing if the rulebook doesn't mandate it. Current GT3 class rules do not.Instead, we think the GT3 will borrow the non-hybrid twin-turbo system from the rest of the 911 family. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six in the 911 Targa already makes 473 hp and 390 lb-ft, not far off the current GT3's 502 hp and 331 lb-ft. The GT division won't have to do too much to turn up the wick and find those extra 29 ponies while retaining reliability under race conditions.Anyone expecting the 3.6-liter twin-turbo engine from the 911 Turbo should cool their jets. The GT3 has never been about outright power, speed, or acceleration. It's about consistency, reliability, and tractability.
