Mini Gives the Countryman a Taste for DirtMiniMini is releasing new version of its Countryman crossover that adds a little more capability for those looking to venture past where the pavement ends.Called the Untamed Edition, the special model debuts for 2027 with more ground clearance, all-terrain tires, revised suspension tuning, and an assortment of accessories that buyers who spend weekends at the campground instead of shopping mall will likely eat up.Production begins in November at BMW Group's Leipzig, Germany, plant, with sales slated to start early next year.Despite the opportunity simply build a looker, the biggest changes are actually mechanical. North American models receive a suspension lift that raises ground clearance by as much as 0.75 inch, along with specially developed Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires. Mini also recalibrated the steering, antilock brakes, and stability-control system to match the new suspension and tires.MiniThe Unlimited package will be offered on several versions of the Countryman, including gasoline, diesel, and electric models. In Europe, however, the raised suspension will be reserved for the electric variants. The Untamed Edition does get a tougher appearance with additional body cladding, redesigned skid-plate-style trim, unique 19-inch wheels, and Dark Steel exterior accents replacing much of the brightwork. A new matte paint finish called Frozen Nomad Blue joins several other exclusive colors, while an "Untamed" mountain logo on the C-pillar marks the special edition.Inside, the little crossover gets new blue-and-black sport seats, textured dashboard trim, and rubber floor mats. The center console also gets elastic cargo straps similar to those found on hiking backpacks.Doubling down on the outdoorsy theme, Mini also worked with two established camping brands. Italian manufacturer Autohome developed a roof tent specifically for the Countryman, while Helinox created matching folding chairs and camping tables. The roof can support up to 165 pounds while driving and 661 pounds when parked, making rooftop camping possible, and an optional tow hitch is rated to pull up to 4,400 pounds.MiniThe Untamed Edition follows a growing trend among automakers. Subaru has built an entire reputation around adventure-ready vehicles, for example, while Toyota (Woodland) Honda (Trailsport), and Mazda (Meridian) have followed suit with their own adventure-focused packages..For the Countryman specifically, once the oddball of the Mini lineup ("shouldn't it be called a Maxi?"), it's now the brand's best-selling model, making it the perfect vehicle to spin into different niches. And Mini is betting the formula that's worked well for other crossover makers will resonate with buyers who want something more adventurous without giving up everyday comfort.
