A New FoundationThe Genesis GV90 arrives with unprecedented features like independently operable B-pillarless coach doors and debuts Hyundai Motor Group's eMP platform. This architecture is designed for Genesis flagship models, similar to how General Motors uses different EV underpinnings by vehicle type, including BEV3 for passenger EVs and BT1 for full-size electric trucks and SUVs.In Hyundai's case, mainstream models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 ride on the E-GMP platform. Full details on the new, more capable 800-volt eMP platform have yet to be disclosed, but Korean Car Blog offers a closer look at its advantages over E-GMP.GenesisRaising The BarThe eMP comes with stronger structural reinforcements, which enable the aforementioned B-pillarless coach doors in the GV90 Neolun. Its cabin frame members are about 1.5 times thicker than conventional structures, which helps provide crash protection comparable to a conventional B-pillar layout. The new platform also uses HMG's largest EV battery at 123.5 kWh, surpassing the 99.8-kWh pack in the E-GMP-based Hyundai Ioniq 9. It is paired with a wireless battery management system, which reduces physical wiring and improves battery-pack packaging. In the dual-motor setup, the GV90 is capable of delivering 657 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production EV in HMG's lineup, even beating performance-focused models like the Ioniq 5 N, which peaks at 641 hp when N Grin Boost is engaged. In addition to those capabilities, the eMP also adds dual electronic limited-slip differentials for finer torque distribution, multi-chamber air suspension, and rear-wheel steering of up to five degrees. The report noted that the status of the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is currently unknown. Interestingly, the Korean marque recalled more than 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis EVs in the U.S. over an ICCU problem that could result in a loss of drive power. That raises the question of whether the ICCU has been redesigned rather than simply carried over, but again, there is no information yet on this matter.Lastly, the new platform provides greater cabin flexibility, with the Neolun version coming with front seats capable of electronically rotating 180 degrees while parked.HyundaiPutting eMP to WorkTo see what the eMP is truly capable of, the Genesis GV90 is set to arrive in the U.S. in early 2027. It will compete in the full-size luxury EV segment against the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Lucid Gravity. While the GV90 sets new highs for the HMG family, some headline figures trail those of its rivals. The Lucid Gravity GT-S produces 1,070 horsepower, while the Cadillac Escalade IQ has an estimated range of 465 miles, well above the Genesis flagship EV's roughly 310-mile internal estimate. As such, it will be interesting to see whether the upcoming model's quirks and eMP-enabled refinements can get the job done.Genesis
