WFMY News 2A 1958 Nash Metropolitan once owned by Jimmy Buffett is among nearly 800 vehicles headed to the auction block this week at GAA Classic Cars in Greensboro. The convertible previously belonged to the "Margaritaville" singer, and GAA Classic Cars General Manager Johnny Ransom said the vehicle comes with documentation connecting it to Buffett."This Nash here was Jimmy Buffett's," Ransom said. "We have pictures to prove it. We also have a title with his name on it — got a copy of it."AdvertisementAdvertisementRansom said Buffett sold the car to a friend in Fort Lauderdale in 2008. The car later changed hands again and has been with its current owner for several years."I think he's ready to let it go on to a new home, to a new Parrot Head, let's hope so," Ransom said. The Nash Metropolitan is one of hundreds of classic, specialty and movie-inspired vehicles included in GAA's second auction of the year. The company is entering its 15th year and holds about three collector-car auctions annually at its Greensboro facility."We have made a name for ourselves right here in Greensboro," Ransom said. "We got the best collector cars all up and down the East Coast."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe auction now fills roughly 8.5 acres under one roof. Ransom said the company advertises more than 750 vehicles for the event, but the final number is expected to be closer to 800."We advertise on 750, but it's closer to 800," he said. "We're still growing."Other vehicles include black Trans Ams reminiscent of "Smokey and the Bandit," an Eleanor-style Mustang inspired by "Gone in 60 Seconds" and a custom SpaceX rocket replica mounted on a truck.Ransom said those connections and memories are a major part of the appeal for collectors."Most of the cars have got stories, and people love stories," he said. "Our whole country was built on automobiles."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe auction is open to the public, and buyers can bid in person or online. Online bidding was already underway before the doors opened."You can go online and put a bid on it right now," Ransom said. "You can do it and not even be here."The GAA Classic Cars auction runs July 23 through July 25 at The Automobile Palace in Greensboro. Doors open each day at 8 a.m., with memorabilia bidding beginning at 9 a.m. and vehicle bidding starting at 9:30 a.m.
