General Motors has just unveiled two new GMCHummer X concepts—a pickup and an SUV—that retain all-electric propulsion but gain a completely new design inside and out and get relegated from full-size to mid-size trucks. Before you get too excited about the Hummer X, GM says it’s “not intended for production.” It was created to mark the official opening of its new advanced design studio in Pasadena, California, which focuses on conceptual design studies that look beyond current production programs to envision “what could be.”A Capable Rock Crawler Built On A Modular PlatformGMObviously, that doesn’t mean that some of the solutions proposed by the Hummer X won’t make it to production one way or another. GM describes the Hummer X pickup and SUV concepts as highly reconfigurable mid-size EVs that reimagine “what a vehicle can mean to the people who drive it.”AdvertisementAdvertisementBorn from a collaboration between GM Advanced Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing and the Advanced Design Pasadena studio, the Hummer X concept is a testbed for new technologies, new aesthetics and new ways to build community around adventure, with a focus on sustainability, GM says. The Hummer X is build on a modular platform, but GM did not reveal details about it. It did say that the electric mid-size truck is envisioned as capable rock crawler built around four pillars: reconfigurability, capability, community, and sustainability.GMStarting with reconfigurability, this is made possible by flexible manufacturing technology called Flex Fab—something GM is already using to build the Cadillac Celestiq. The solution enables fast, small-batch, on-demand production, similar to 3D printing but for metal. That means there’s no need for specialized stamping tools, with the same machines being able to churn out multiple designs. Thanks to Flex Fab, the Hummer X adopts a new aesthetic with a clean, flat-topped silhouette with rounded edges, laser-welded seams, and visible precision bolts. While the Hummer X still has those unmistakable Hummer looks, it also appears more sophisticated and high-tech.AdvertisementAdvertisementOff-road capability is enabled by 35-to-37-inch Goodyear tires, beadlock wheels, Multimatic shocks, removable fender flares and serious underbody protection. The vehicle also has a low center of gravity and “extreme on-demand acceleration,” even though no powertrain specs are available.A Configurable Interior With Stackable DisplaysThe impression of high-tech is even stronger in the cabin, which is equally adaptable thanks to stackable displays that let drivers tailor their digital experience to the driving environment: rock crawling, trail running, or cruising the highway. As for the sustainability part, the Hummer X concept explores mono-materials that can be fully recycled, such as snap fits and mechanical fasteners that replace adhesives, for example. The seat backs, headrest backs and instrument panel ends are made from recycled car fascias, while the parts are designed for easy disassembly, allowing customers, to swap, share and recirculate them as part of the community experience.Speaking of the community, the Hummer X was designed for what the team calls the “builder maker,” someone who doesn’t just drive a vehicle but also builds it, modifies it and shares it with a community of like-minded people.AdvertisementAdvertisementTo that end, the Advanced Design Pasadena team conceptualized the Hummer Hub, a suite of connected apps designed to connect drivers and their vehicles. One application of Hummer Hub is a scout drone that can fly ahead on the trail, feed real-time terrain data back to the vehicle, and land and dock itself when not used. The concept also features several Easter eggs such as the team's mantra imprinted in Morse code on the floor, and the tire treads that spell out “the courage to get lost leads to new discoveries.”GMC HUMMER X SUV SPECS:Overall Dimensions:Wheelbase: 2945.5mm (116”)Length: 4782.5mm (188.3”)Height: 1852.6mm (72.9”)Width: 2032mm (80”)Approach Angle: 44 Deg.Departure Angle: 46 Deg.Breakover Angle: 30.9 Deg.Ground Clearance: 334.3mm (13.2”)Flex Fab Percentage: 57%Tires by Goodyear:Rock: 315/75R18 x 9, OD 37”Wheels: 18" Aluminum with accent insertsGMC HUMMER X TRUCK SPECS:Overall Dimensions:Wheelbase: 3318.6mm (130.7”)Length: 5264.5mm (207.3”)Height: 1854.4mm (73.0”)Width: 2032mm (80”)Approach Angle: 41.5 Deg.Departure Angle: 29.7 Deg.Breakover Angle: 24.9 Deg.Ground Clearance: 316.7mm (12.5”)Flex Fab Percentage: 57%Tires by Goodyear:Street: 305/55R22 x 9.5, OD 35”Wheels: 22" Aluminum with accent insertsAdvertisementAdvertisementThis story was originally published by Autoblog on May 29, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
