General Motors To Reintroduce CarPlay (Mostly)AutoGuide.comRoss BallotThu, September 24, 2026 at 3:26 PM UTCAdd us on GooglePhoto Credit: Ross BallotPhoto Credit: Ross BallotA big qualm with recent General Motors vehicles has been regarding their infotainment. While the overarching company once included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles, the latest round of new offerings was sans the ubiquitous bit of phone-meets-car tech, thanks to the polarizing decision to only offer its in-house, primitive phone-mirroring utility. After massive criticism, GM is now walking back its way of doing things with regard to CarPlay.Source: GMSource: GMAdvertisementAdvertisementBack in 2025, GM announced it would abandon Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its automotive offerings. There was massive backlash, and they doubled down, rolling out new systems without the realm's gold standard included. Buyers and automotive journalists alike lambasted the company for the decision.Oh, how the tides have turned. The new-for-2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will re-adopt CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, in an effort to bring back interest from buyers who might be turned off by the lack of the tech duo. Apparently, more than half of new vehicle buyers say a car, truck, or SUV not having CarPlay/AA is a deal-breaker, so GM had to quickly reverse its mentality on being part of the party. Other numbers show that 80% of buyers are only looking to purchase a vehicle with this tech, so including it is a no-brainer.Here's the catch: GM's electric vehicles (EVs) will still, for the time being, come without the aforementioned infotainment on board. Thanks to the technological architecture developed while GM tried to go independent for this, don't be surprised to see the company go back on this stance in the coming months as well.Become an AutoGuide insider.
