Ford’s new affordable mid-size electric truck was announced earlier this year, and company executives are now hinting at how much even the nicest Fathom pickup will cost, according to The Detroit Free Press.
We already know a base model Ford Fathom will start at $29,945, including a $1595 destination charge. But Andrew Frick, president of Ford’s Model e division, told the Detroit Free Press that even a fully-loaded Fathom won’t crest $40,000. That’s some serious value for a truck that is set to offer a touchscreen, built-in Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Blue Cruise hands-free driving capabilities.
"We'll have a range that goes to the high $30,000 range. And we'll have a couple different offerings within that," said to the Detroit Free Press. "If you know that nearly fifty percent of the U.S. new vehicle industry transacts under $40,000, not only do we expect Fathom ... to attract new and used EV buyers, but also (gasoline) and hybrid customers, especially because we're going to have much lower operating costs than even a mainstream hybrid vehicle."
Ford CEO Jim Farley was duly impressed during a test drive of the Fathom. "It completely blew me away. Zero to sixty is huge … and the hands-free experience was like something I've never experienced. Fathom is really a breakthrough product. It's highly capable, innovative, affordable,” Farley said during a Wall Street analyst meeting on October 28.
Designers at Ford told Road & Track earlier this year that the Fathom will be spacious, too, as the four-door pickup will have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4. Additionally, the truck is being used to pilot a new “Universal EV Production System” at its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. With over $2 billion invested in retooling the plant, Ford is betting big on the new production process and its 400-volt Universal EV platform, which will launch with the Fathom.
Details about the Fathom’s powertrain and specific trim levels have yet to be announced. The all-electric pickup truck is set to arrive in late 2027, but pre-orders will open in the first quarter of that year.
