In Australia, Ford has transformed the heavy-duty pickup into a prototype emergency response vehicle carrying its own water, pumps, hoses and firefighting equipment.Called the Ford Ranger Super Duty Fire Response Unit, the one-off build was developed with Deakin University, XL Service Bodies, and Zeliox Australia. Its most interesting trick is an electrical system capable of powering its pumps without requiring the separate diesel or gasoline generator typically used for this kind of equipment.The concept isn't intended to replace a conventional fire engine. Ford says eight minutes is the service-delivery benchmark for urban fire and emergency responses, a target that becomes increasingly challenging as development spreads into areas where suburbs meet bushland.Rather than trying to squeeze everything from a traditional fire engine onto a pickup, the team concentrated on equipment useful during those first minutes. The Ranger carries a dedicated water supply, pumps and hoses, connections for additional water, breathing apparatus, first-aid supplies, recovery equipment, emergency lighting, and communications hardware.Ford chose the Ranger Super Duty Super Cab as the foundation. Its smaller passenger compartment leaves additional room for equipment while retaining enclosed space behind the front seats for electronics, medical supplies, and other items that need protection from the weather.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Super Duty's 4,500-kg (9,921-pound) gross vehicle mass rating also allows it to carry the equipment without aftermarket suspension upgrades. The Ranger has both a high-flow pump rated at 1,000 kPa and 500 liters per minute and an ultra-high-pressure unit capable of 3,000 psi at 18 liters per minute, giving responders different options depending on the situation.A standalone combustion-powered generator would have been an obvious way to provide the necessary electricity. Ford instead worked with Zeliox Australia on an integrated inverter and charging system with solar-charging capability, allowing the pumps to operate without a separate generator.That should mean less noise, fewer emissions at the scene, reduced maintenance, and one less piece of equipment for responders to manage. Ford also integrated controls for the pumps, emergency lighting, and siren into the Ranger's existing 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen rather than filling the cabin with additional switchgear.A Pickup, Not A Replacement Fire EngineImage Credit: Ford.A Ford Ranger obviously can't match the capabilities of a 15-ton urban fire appliance. Ford says those larger vehicles can cost roughly AUD$700,000 to AUD$1.5 million and are equipped to deal with a far wider range of emergencies.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Fire Response Unit is instead an experiment in getting essential capability to an incident sooner. In sprawling urban-interface areas, a smaller four-wheel-drive vehicle could also potentially reach places where a conventional fire engine is less practical.Ford unveiled the prototype at the AFAC emergency-management conference in Melbourne in August. While there are no announced production plans, the company describes it as a blueprint for a fleet solution that could eventually be built and supported through its Ford Pro conversion network.That makes this Ranger considerably more interesting than a show truck covered in emergency lights.
