When the Topolino first made its US debut in July, its maximum speed of 19 mph (31 km / h) meant it failed to meet the requirements for LSV classification. As a result, customers could purchase the small electric vehicle but were unable to drive it on public roads.
At the time, we reported how Fiat said its electric quadricycle had “potential for street-legal capability for late summer 2026”, stating it planned to offer ‘Low Speed Vehicle’ conversion kits by the end of summer 2026.
True to their word, Fiat has come through with the goods: thanks to a number of technical upgrades, the 2027 model year of the Topolino will now be compliant on some public roads in the US. The updated model can now be legally driven on public roads with speed limits of up to 35 mph (56 km / h), subject to state and local regulations.
Fiat is also offering existing owners of the Topolino a complimentary LSV upgrade, allowing them to bring previously purchased vehicles (i.e. 2026 models) up to standard.
In a statement, FIAT North America lead Andrew Waterhouse said: “Topolino represents an exciting new chapter for FIAT in North America, bringing the brand’s signature Italian style and la dolce vita lifestyle into the emerging micromobility space.”
He continued: “For 2027, we are building on that momentum with new colours, a new open-air body style and low-speed vehicle street-legal capability, giving owners even more freedom to personalise how and where they enjoy their Topolino.”
The 2027 range is comprised of three variants: the standard Topolino, the Dolce Vita, and the new Open Air. The latter combines the Dolce Vita’s retractable soft-top roof with the standard model’s doors. All three versions have the same starting price of $13,995, excluding a destination fee, and feature a new full-colour digital instrument display. The Topolino has a stated range of 46 miles (74 km) and a 6 kW electric motor.
