Trailhawk, Overland Return to Grand CherokeeJeep - MotorTrendWith the refreshed 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee making its debut with a new top engine option, now seems like the right time to reintroduce two upper trims missing from 2026. Yes, the off-road-capable midsize SUV lineup sees the return of its Trailhawk and Overland models, with the new Hurricane 4 Turbo engine serving as their powerplant. The original trims from 2025 used the plug-in hybrid 4xe as the powertrain of choice. But with Stellantis abandoning almost all of its electrification plans for the U.S., the company dropped those versions for the 2026 model year. Now, thanks to the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 known as the Hurricane 4 Turbo, these off-road-focused models will make a comeback for 2027.Don't worry about the Trailhawk and Overland going turbo-four. This little engine punches well above its weight, making 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque arriving at 3,000 rpm. It's also capable of towing up to 6,200 pounds when equipped with the Trailer Tow Package, which is standard on the Trailhawk. Both trims will also use the TorqueFlite 850RE eight-speed automatic transmission and Quadra-Trac II two-speed transfer case, but after that, the packages begin to diverge. The Trailhawk Ain't No ChickenSelec-Terrain also gains a new Rock mode that helps ensure drive power gets to the ground, working with the electronic rear limited-slip differential. Six standard steel skidplates protect vital parts like the engine, fuel tank, transfer case, transmission, and more.Jeep - MotorTrendA Trail-Rated ExteriorTo make the Trailhawk truly off-road-capable, Jeep reshaped the standard 2027 Grand Cherokee front fascia for better tire clearance. You'll also find its signature red tow hooks, and the hood features a matte-black glare-resistant decal with red Trailhawk detailing on the left side. Along the sides, you find Jeep's famous Trail Rated badging, finished in black and red to match the Trailhawk theme. Out back, there's another red tow hook and Trailhawk badge, while the standard metallic accents for the Grand Cherokee get a dark neutral finish.A Real Off-Roader's Office SpaceInside, the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk uses all the new standard tech, including the 12.3-inch infotainment display found in the regular midsize Jeep, but with off-road-specific features. The Off-Road Pages give drivers information about vehicle dynamics, pitch and roll, extra gauges, and access to Selec-Terrain management and suspension settings. It also offers an integrated TrailCam, a special camera system that lets drivers see the trail with dynamic tire-path views, and the rear camera gets a washer to help keep its view clear. All occupants sit in Nappa leather seats in Global Black with red accent stitching and Trailhawk-specific details.A Serious Off-Road StanceThe only issue we foresee is the inclusion of the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. Sure, it can increase ride height on demand, but that typically also means more air pressure in the suspension bags and a harsher ride when off-roading. But maybe it won't need to lift much, as standard ground clearance is 11.4 inches with a set of 30.5-inch 265/60R18 Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires on 18-inch Granite Crystal wheels.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat beats the 2027 Ford Explorer Tremor by 2.7 inches, despite the Blue Oval's offering using 31-inch all-terrain tires. Compared to other off-road-capable midsize SUVs, the 2027 Subaru Outback Wilderness has 9.5 inches of ground clearance on 225/65R17 tires, which have a 28.5-inch outer diameter, and the 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport sits at 8.3 inches on 275/60R18 tires with a 31-inch outer diameter. But that's not the complete picture, either, because you also need to consider approach, breakover, and departure angles. These are all influenced by the relationship between the lowest part of the bumpers, the lowest point between the wheels, where the tires meet the ground, and the wheelbase length. The good news is the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk meets the needs of most off-roaders with 36 degrees of approach, 24.4 degrees of breakover, and 30.3 degrees of departure. Its direct crosstown rival, the Ford Explorer Tremor, manages only 24.1, 18.8, and 23.6 degrees, respectively. Among its main import rivals, the Outback Wilderness comes in at 20, 23.6, and 21.2 degrees, while the Passport TrailSport has 23 degrees of approach, 16.7 degrees of breakover, and 23.1 degrees of departure.Jeep - MotorTrendYou'll Find Off-Road Luxury in the OverlandIf maximum off-road capability isn't your top priority but you still want the option to head off-pavement for the weekend, then consider the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Inside, occupants ride in luxurious Nappa leather seats with "Overland" embossed on the front seat backs. Front passengers also get heated and ventilated seats, and rear passengers get standard heated seats. The An-Teak accents use Satin Chrome trim with Liquid Chrome tracers to deliver a mix of rugged looks and premium presentation.AdvertisementAdvertisementDrivers also get access to a standard 360-degree surround-view camera system with a rear camera washer. They can also access the Off-Road Pages through the standard 12.3-inch infotainment display and use the hill descent control system to automatically maintain downhill speeds.Outside, the Grand Cherokee Overland features a unique but still-aggressive front fascia design, matched by bright tow hooks, a painted black lower body, and a body-color roof. The standard Grand Cherokee exterior accents are finished in Silver Silk, and the 21-inch machined-face, semi-gloss Granite Crystal wheels complement the look nicely. The 2027 Overland rides on Jeep's Quadra-Lift air suspension system and gets semi-active damping for a smooth ride.Photo credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: Jeep - MotorTrendPhoto credit: MotorTrendComing This YearBoth the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Overland will make their way to dealerships later this year, but exact timing and pricing aren't available just yet. Both will be built at Jeep's Detroit Assembly Complex in Mack, Michigan. Based on how pricing was structured for the 2025 model year, we expect the Overland to come in around the lower $70,000 range and won't be surprised to see the Trailhawk hit the mid- to upper-$60,000 range.
