Edison Motors Builds a 500,000-Pound Heavy-Haul Truck Designed to Get StuckA truck designed never to stop is useful. A truck designed to be recovered when it stops is more useful in the places Edison Motors wants to send its BDE.Royal Oilfield's R12, nicknamed "Big D," is a mechanical tri-drive winch tractor built for mud, ice, snow, mountain roads, oilfield equipment, and heavy-haul work. Edison says the name refers both to the BDE platform and Royal's unit number 12, or "Big Dozen."A recent Edison walk-around video dives deeply into the truck's unusually blunt design: its front bumper, skid plate, and recovery tube are intended to let another truck winch it out after the R12 buries itself. The arrangement can also help transfer weight onto the recovery vehicles when conditions become especially ugly.Big D Is Built Around Recovery, Not Road MileageThe mechanical BDE uses a Cummins X15 producing 605 hp, an Eaton 18-speed transmission, and Meritor RZ 166 drive axles. Its chassis carries a 20,000-lb steer axle, Neway AD 390 rear suspension, 12-inch-tall and 0.5-inch-thick frame rails, a 1,800-square-inch radiator, a metal cab, and butterfly hood and fenders.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe walk-around video shows several choices aimed at keeping the truck moving, or at least making repairs possible. The fenders are strong enough to stand on, the hood panels can be removed to release heat during low-speed heavy hauling, and external air breathers keep dusty off-road work from immediately choking the intake. Edison also fits chain storage beside the 550-L fuel tanks, illuminated chain-up areas, a folding rear fender, a 40-ton winch, and a Texas-bed rear roll that can switch between tractor and body-duty configurations. The cab follows the same ideology. Its dashboard is bolted together rather than held by disposable plastic clips, and it hinges forward for access. Edison also includes a 46-inch sleeper, through-storage, cabinets, a fan, gimbal cup holders, and enough legroom for a driver to recline while waiting on a job. It looks old-fashioned because that is the point. The company is building something meant to be fixed in the field, not admired from a dealership lounge. The Hybrid Version Is a Different Kind of MonsterEdison lists five public BDE projects: Royal Oilfield's mechanical tri-drive winch tractor, its own diesel-electric counterpart, Tolko's diesel-electric quad-wagon logger, Emcon's diesel-electric snowplow, and an unnamed diesel-electric vehicle. In the hybrid version, a Scania diesel generator, CDTL 5000 e-axles, a 110-kWh LMO battery, and a 740-V electrical system replace the standard drivetrain. According to Edison, the generator can produce as much as 500 kW, while wheel output reaches 2,400 hp (1,800 kW) at peak, 1,600 hp (1,200 kW) continuously, and 150,000 lb-ft of torque. Its single-axle, tandem, and tri-drive configurations are listed at 800 hp/50,000 lb-ft, 1,600 hp/100,000 lb-ft, and 2,400 hp/150,000 lb-ft, respectively. Edison says the generator can be refueled in five minutes.AdvertisementAdvertisementin May earlier this year, Canada authorized the company to build Class 8 diesel-electric hybrid trucks, following earlier approval for its diesel-only models. At that stage, the company had delivered a Class 8 prototype and a converted Class 5 vehicle to demonstration partners, projected three further 2026 deliveries, and planned a B.C. plant for about 125 vehicles per year. The BDE is still in the proving phase. Edison said in a July 3 FrontFundr update that mechanical and hybrid driving tests had begun, along with CMVSS compliance submissions to Transport Canada. A Reddit community report said Big D reached Edison's test track on August 9, while another post confirmed a mechanical BDE logging assignment hauling 130,000 lb on August 5.Edison's larger growth plan includes more than 30 employees across eight divisions, up to 13 near-term additions, and a five-year target of 50 employees. Its May offering memorandum listed 305 acres for the main facility. The company had raised C$14 million, while an offering capped at 363,637 shares priced at C$55 could reach C$20 million. Prototype budgets were C$500,000 for the mechanical BDE in Q2 2026 and another C$500,000 for the hybrid version in Q4 2026."This transition reflects the natural progression of our company as we move from early-stage prototyping into a more structured growth phase," Chace Barber, Chief Executive Officer of Edison Motors said. "We will survive without your investment."AdvertisementAdvertisementThat confidence will eventually meet the only test that really means something: putting these trucks to work repeatedly where ordinary highway tractors would rather not go. Big D does not need to avoid getting stuck. It needs to remain useful after it does.
