Jason's Auto Repair/TikTokA driver was told by a dealership that his vehicle needed new brakes, but a mechanic who took a second look claimed he could safely squeeze thousands of additional miles out of them.Mechanic Jason from Jason's Auto Repair shared the situation on TikTok after the driver brought the vehicle to him for a second opinion.According to Jason, the dealership recommended replacing the brakes on the SUV while it was there for other work, and he claimed that it was something that happened frequently."This is a bread-and-butter, happens all the time and they're gonna tell you something the car needs. Is it really a gray area? Yes or no?" Jason said.He first showed the rear brakes, which he said still had plenty of life remaining. The front brake pads were more worn, but they still measured 3 millimeters, and Jason still didn't think it was something that warranted immediate replacement."This is probably another easy 5,000 miles left, another oil change over here," he continued.Jason's Auto Repair/TikTokInstead, Jason suggested the driver could actually wait until his next oil change before replacing them.He went on to urge drivers to ask for proof when a dealership or repair shop recommended additional work."ASK FOR PICTURES AND VIDEOS SENT TO YOU WHEN ANYONE SAYS YOUR [VEHICLE] NEEDS SUCH WORK," Jason captioned the video. However, drivers shouldn't wait too long to replace their brake pads because it can potentially create a much more expensive issue.According to AAA, estimates for brake pad replacement typically run between $150 and $350 per axle. If the worn pads damage the rotors, that can bump the price up to anywhere from $250 to $500 per axle.Fortunately, there are warning signs that a driver's brake pads need some attention, including squealing or grinding noises, longer stopping distance, vibrations while braking or a brake warning light.Read More From First for Autos'Friends' Alum Matt LeBlanc Seen Driving Old Ford Focus Despite $85 Million Net WorthPolice Search for Corvette Driver After Video Appears to Show Car Top 186 MPH on Public RoadBMW Driver's Dollar Store Headlight Hack Has TikTok Doing a Double TakeThis story Dealership Tells Driver He Needs New Brakes, Mechanic Looks and Disagrees: 'Happens All the Time' first appeared on First for Autos.
