Following a similar action undertaken in January, the Kuala Lumpur city hall (DBKL) has again fined six utility contractors for a variety of safety and environmental violations that were uncovered during an enforcement operation targeting road excavation works across the city. This time, checks at eight locations, including Jalan Kerinchi in Bangsar, Jalan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah in Segambut and Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz in Titiwangsa, revealed standard operating procedure violations and resulted in 11 compound notices being issued to the six contractors. Inspections carried out at the locations uncovered a range of offences, including failing to install road blinker lights, not having traffic controller measures on-site to damaging pedestrian walkways. Other violations included closing roadways without permission to poor housekeeping, which left public roads heavily soiled. As it was in January, lorries without permits transporting construction materials were also discovered. The council said that the operation was aimed at monitoring work carried out by contractors during repairs or maintenance related to pipe installation, road paving, drainage repair and utility works to ensure compliance.Enforcement action was taken under the Material Transport By-Laws (WPKL) 1997 and the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.
