Johnny Five, Jackson Five, Maroon 5, Five Alive, Five Spice, 5ive will make you get down, Mach 5 (the razor and the car)... good things come in fives. The BMW X5 is one of those good things, and in about five months, we're going to get a brand-new one. The (you guessed it) fifth-generation X5 will be the first-ever BMW to be offered with five different drive variants, according to the head of the company. Yes, that's a lot of fivving. X5 Confirmed For Summer, New 7 Series Next Month CarBuzz/Valnet BMW's annual conference happened today, and during his speech, chair of the board Oliver Zipse spoke about where the company is and where it is going. Where it is going includes confirmation that the next-generation BMW X5 is going to be unveiled this summer. Before that happens, we're also going to get an update to the BMW 7 Series. That one will happen at Auto China in Beijing, which is scheduled for April 24 through May 3.CarBuzz/ValnetCarBuzz spies have spotted the new X5 multiple times over the last few months, in both gas and electric variants. Zipse confirmed that the new X5 will have five different driveline variants, and that doesn't just mean five different gas or diesel engines. He confirmed it would be sold as a plug-in hybrid, as a battery electric, and that in 2028 BMW will launch a hydrogen-powered model. This will be a hydrogen fuel cell, where hydrogen is used to make electricity in the vehicle, rather than hydrogen combustion where it is burned in an engine. This will be BMW's first-ever mass-production FCEV, though the company has been experimenting for years.Zipse didn't confirm the other two, but since this is BMW, a gas engine is a certainty. A diesel option is the likely fifth, as diesel engines are still quite popular in Europe and other parts of the world where fuel isn't cheap. Neue X5 Will Get More Style BMW We're already familiar with much of the design thanks to spy photos. The fifth-generation X5 will get the new corporate face, which we've already seen on the Neue Klasse iX3.Get past the grille, and the SUV is slightly sleeker than the model it replaced. There are more curves in the X5's sides, and more tumblehome – how the body narrows as it moves from metal to the glass and greenhouse area. The headlights might match the iX3, but the rear lights won't. We've described the iX3s as being like a golf club shape, while the new X5 is a raised eyebrow.Zipse described the refreshed 7 Series as being "an almost completely new vehicle." Much like the 7's main rival, Mercedes-Benz's S-Class, earlier this year, the refresh will be very comprehensive. It will include Neue Klasse tech, and will be the first model update (versus a fully-new generation) to get that tech. The chair didn't go into detail, but we expect BMW's Panoramic iDrive as a minimum. One last thing, expect a lot more LLM AI from BMW. It is adding Amazon Alexa+ to vehicles in most markets. In China, it is adding DeepSeek functionality, and in that market it is also working with Alibaba Banma "to establish the next generation of intuitive in-car voice control."
