Joe Sohm/Visions of America/Universal Images Group/Newscom/The Mega AgencyTurns out beauty can sometimes come with danger.A new report highlighted a 25-mile stretch of Colorado's U.S. Route 550 as the "scariest road" in America.Nicknamed "The Million Dollar Highway," the route winds through the cliffs of Colorado's Uncompahgre Gorge in the San Juan Mountains. One particularly daunting stretch between the towns of Ouray and Silverton has drivers climbing more than 2,000 feet across just six miles, as reported by The New Yorker. The road is also remarkably narrow. In some parts, it measures just 23 feet wide and lacks guardrails along some of its most treacherous sections. That combination of steep terrain and narrow lanes isn't the only challenge. The highway is prone to falling rocks and avalanches, with snow during major storms capable of crushing cars, per the report.Art Gurmankin/UCG/Universal Images Group/Newscom/The Mega AgencyThe speed limit on the narrow stretch is just 25 miles per hour.U.S. Route 550 is also home to roughly 60 avalanche slide paths, some of which have been given nicknames such as Mother Cline, Slippery Jim and Riley Boy. The New Yorker describes Highway 550 as the "most avalanche-prone road" that remains open year-round.Then there are the drops: According to the outlet, some sections of the route feature drop-offs "of more than four hundred feet."Despite the intimidating statistics, the Million Dollar Highway has also earned recognition as a scenic road trip. USA Today included the route on its "10 Best Bucket-List Road Trips," highlighting the same dramatic scenery that makes the highway so beautiful — and potentially dangerous.Read More From First for AutosMan Trapped for 14 Minutes in Tesla Cybercab After It Starts Driving in CirclesChevy Silverado Owner Receives $15K Repair Quote From Dealership, $9K From Second MechanicCalifornia Drivers Could Face $238 Fine for Flashing Headlights to Warn Others About PoliceThis story Colorado Highway Dubbed 'America's Scariest Road' With 400-Foot Drops, Avalanche Risk and No Guardrails first appeared on First for Autos.
