Agricultural spray drones are no longer an emerging technology in China. They are ordinary farm machinery at extraordinary scale. China entered 2026 with about 309,000 plant-protection drones, and those aircraft performed roughly 203 million hectare-treatments during 2025. A hectare treated three times counts as three hectare-treatments, so that figure measures agricultural work rather than unique farmland covered, but it is the appropriate denominator for machinery utilization. China added roughly 58,000 aircraft and another 25 million hectare-treatments of annual activity in a single year from an already enormous operating base. The previous year’s scale was already striking, with about 251,000 agricultural drones and 178 million hectare-treatments reported for 2024. The United States is moving in the same technological direction, but from a radically smaller base. The American Spray Drone Coalition’s 2025 industry survey estimates that approved Part 137 operators performed about 16.4 million acres of treatments during the year, equivalent to roughly 6.64 million hectare-treatments. The Chinese and American numbers come from different reporting systems, so pretending the ratio is precise to a decimal place would be silly, but “about thirty times” is robust enough to describe the difference. These are not agricultural-drone industries operating at remotely comparable scale. Farmland area does not explain the gap. China has roughly 128 million hectares of cultivated land, while the United States has roughly 133 million hectares actively used for crops in the comparison underlying my analysis. The two countries are in the same broad range physically, yet Chinese drones perform vastly more treatments per hectare of agricultural land. Whatever produced China’s lead, it is not a thirtyfold difference in the amount of land available to farm. Percentage growth can make the American position look deceptively close. U.S. treatment activity grew very rapidly during 2025, while China’s much larger market grew more slowly in percentage terms. But a mature market adding a modest percentage to an enormous denominator can still add far more real activity than a smaller market growing spectacularly. China added almost 25 million hectare-treatments of annual activity during 2025 alone, several times the estimated size of the entire American spray-drone market. That American growth is important for another reason. It makes it harder to explain China’s success away as a quirk of small plots, terraces, rice paddies or poor access for wheeled machinery. Those conditions certainly make drones useful in parts of China, but American farmers already operate inside one of the most heavily mechanized agricultural systems in the world, with large tractors, sophisticated self-propelled sprayers and a mature crewed agricultural-aviation industry. If contractors are nevertheless finding rapidly increasing amounts of work for spray drones there, then the aircraft are solving agricultural problems that exist well beyond the Chinese farming context. The jobs are not difficult to imagine. Tall crops can become awkward or damaging to enter with ground equipment. Wet fields may be inaccessible at the moment a treatment is needed. Small or irregular parcels can make large sprayers inefficient, while repeated contractor work can justify equipment that an individual farmer would never buy. Drones can also reach crops without wheel tracks, crop damage or a crewed aircraft, giving them niches even where conventional equipment remains excellent. The relevant comparison is not whether a drone beats the best possible ground treatment under ideal conditions, but whether it performs a particular job at an attractive total cost when farmers actually need the work done. Europe makes the comparison more interesting. Chinese agricultural drones remain available across much of the European market, yet Europe has nothing resembling Chinese deployment. That weakens the simple explanation that China leads because the hardware is Chinese and cheap. Access to capable equipment is clearly part of the story, but access alone does not turn an aircraft into a large operating industry. Farmers need a practical way to use it repeatedly, and the machinery has to fit into regulation, contracting, agronomy, maintenance and agricultural operations. That is where the Chinese numbers become more revealing than the technology itself. A market with hundreds of thousands of working aircraft and hundreds of millions of annual treatments eventually stops asking whether drones can spray fields at all. It begins producing the kinds of questions associated with established machinery: what happens when the installed fleet ages, how the latest machines compare with equipment already in service, how operators improve performance after thousands of real treatments, and what makes farmers or contractors keep buying the next generation. Those questions are much harder to see from a pilot program or a fast-growing market still starting from a small base. China has had enough equipment doing enough real agricultural work for long enough that the industry has entered a different phase, while the United States is simultaneously demonstrating that the underlying technology has genuine value in a very different farming system. The headline number is useful, but it is not the most important finding. China is doing about thirty times as much agricultural-drone work as the United States on a broadly comparable agricultural land base. The harder question is what China built around the aircraft that allowed that difference to emerge—and how difficult that system will be for competitors to reproduce.
