California Is Bragging About Falling Car Theft Numbers. Teenagers on TikTok figured out you could start one of these cars with a USB cable and a screwdriver, and the Kia Boyz theft challenge became a genuine national crime wave rather than just a meme. That crisis, more than any broad change in lawlessness, is why nationwide vehicle theft climbed from roughly 722,000 incidents in 2019 to more than a million in 2023. It's also why California's decline lines up so neatly with Hyundai and Kia finally shipping a real fix.Here's the detail that should needle anyone who assumed this problem was already solved by regulation: the United States has never had a federal law requiring automakers to install engine immobilizers. Canada has required them since the mid-2000s under its own motor vehicle safety standard. The closest American equivalent, the Federal Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Standard, only requires manufacturers to stamp VIN numbers onto parts of high-theft vehicle lines so a chop shop can be traced after the fact.
