The Denza Z9 GT will add a more accessible tri-motor pure-electric variant on September 9 to bridge a 70,000-yuan pricing void.Credit: Denza Understand China EV’s Market Real-time notifications when critical EV data is released All important data in one place 2,000,000+ data points Become a member BYD’s Denza will expand the Z9 GT’s pure-electric lineup on September 9 by adding a new tri-motor e3 version. Denza General Manager Li Hui announced the variant on Weibo, saying it addresses customer demand for tri-motor handling and “more lightweight configuration choices.” The new variant is positioned to fill a 70,000-yuan (10,400 USD) gap between the existing rear-wheel-drive flagship and the top-spec e3 Performance. Official pricing has not yet been announced, but trade expectations place the new trim at roughly 329,800 to 339,800 yuan (49,100 to 50,600 USD). The Z9 GT plug-in hybrid (DM-i) lineup already offers two tri-motor models priced at 309,800 yuan (46,200 USD) and 339,800 yuan (50,600 USD). The upcoming EV trim therefore adds another price point for Denza’s existing 850-kW pure-electric powertrain. De-contenting luxury, not a track car Denza’s “lightweight configuration” wording should not be confused with the high-downforce prototype spotted testing in Germany near the Nürburgring. That development mule is used for track validation, while the upcoming release is a standard showroom variant. The Z9 GT is also part of Denza’s broader international expansion, having launched in Europe in April with BYD’s Flash Charging technology and a starting price of roughly 115,000 euros. While the ultra-long-range single-motor version is rated for up to 1,036 km under China’s CLTC cycle (roughly 850 km WLTP), high-output tri-motor variants for Europe are rated closer to 600 km under the WLTP standard. In domestic showrooms, available component information suggests the new trim trades some of the e3 Performance’s equipment for a lighter setup. The 369,800-yuan (55,100 USD) e3 Performance is equipped with carbon-ceramic brake discs, dual active-compressor refrigerators, and motorised rear seats with multi-point pneumatic massage. The new trim is expected to use ventilated cast-iron brake discs instead and offer a streamlined cabin. The powertrain remains unchanged: an 850-kW (1,140 hp) tri-motor AWD layout delivering 1,210 N·m through a 230-kW front motor and two 310-kW rear permanent-magnet motors. The setup pairs BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 with 800V flash charging and rear-wheel steering with up to ±10 degrees of steering angle. Domestic retail sales climbed from 712 units in March to 6,025 in June before easing 11.3% month-on-month to 5,344 units in July, according to China EV DataTracker. The Z9 GT accounted for 29.6% of Denza’s domestic July sales, second only to the D9 MPV at 6,873 units. The July decline alone does not establish longer-term demand deterioration after the rapid sales ramp that followed its March update. In this expected 330,000-yuan bracket, the new Z9 GT trim overlaps with the Zeekr 001 AWD, which costs 299,000 to 329,000 yuan (44,500 to 49,000 USD). However, the Denza offers up to 850 kW (1,140 hp), giving it a 270-kW (362 hp) power advantage over the Zeekr’s 580-kW (778 hp) maximum output.
