Yangwang, the ultra-premium sub-brand of BYD's (HKEX: 1211), announced that its flagship all-electric supercar, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme (U9X), has set a new global top-speed record for automobiles, breaking the 500-kilometer-per-hour barrier.
Yangwang announced on Friday that the U9 Xtreme reached a top speed of 503.17 kilometers per hour (312.66 miles per hour) in a top-speed challenge on public roads in Abu Dhabi, setting a new global speed record.
The brand billed the electric supercar as the "world's fastest production car" in promotional posters.
The latest result surpasses the U9 Xtreme's previously certified record of 496.22 kilometers per hour, set at Germany's ATP proving ground, further cementing its status as the world's fastest production car.
Prior to that, a Yangwang U9 engineering test car reached 472.41 kilometers per hour at the ATP proving ground in Germany in August 2025, breaking the then-global top-speed record for electric vehicles.
Yangwang gave the U9 Xtreme its global debut and opened pre-orders on September 20, 2025. The model is limited to 30 units worldwide and aims to achieve breakthroughs in both top speed and lap time for a pure electric vehicle.
Beyond its straight-line performance, the car lapped Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds in September 2025, becoming the first all-electric production car to break the 7-minute barrier at the circuit.
The production version of the Yangwang U9 Xtreme was officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show held in April this year. With a price tag of more than 20 million yuan ($2.98 million) per unit, it became the most expensive car sold at the show.
To support extreme speeds exceeding 500 kilometers per hour, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme is built on the world's first mass-produced 1,200-volt full-domain ultra-high-voltage platform and equipped with a track-grade Blade Battery supporting 30C ultra-high-rate discharge.
The car features BYD's e4 quad-motor independent drive system, with 4 motors capable of spinning at up to 30,000 revolutions per minute and a peak output of 555 kW (744 hp) per motor.
Combined peak output reaches 2,220 kW, delivering more than 3,000 PS of horsepower and a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per ton.
The vehicle is also equipped with the DiSus-X fully active body control system, an enhanced titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system, and China's first semi-slick tires custom-built for speeds above 500 kilometers per hour.
For comparison, the standard Yangwang U9 went on sale in China in February 2024, powered by 4 motors with a peak output of 240 kW each, and currently starts at 1.8 million yuan.
