SUVs are the tool of choice for everything from the school run to the weekly shop these days. But it wasn't always that way. The Sport Utility Vehicle once related to a fairly utilitarian off-road tool, mainly found in farmers' fields in Sussex, or dropping off supplies in an outpost of Australia. But when these vehicles became more popular as everyday vehicles, they underwent a transformation. These days, posh SUVs often have to fulfill two key selling points. They need to have a presence that is both upmarket and classy, but still regain the rugged dependability that suggests you could take them across an Outer Mongolian steppe with ease. But which SUV manages to best combine the effortless reliability of a Lexus with the commanding elegance and effortless cool of a Range Rover? Can you guess what it is? The SUV Craze Started Way Back In The '60s Bring a Trailer Before we get there, let's have a look at how the Range Rover became one of the indisputable kings of the SUV genre. There is a lot of debate over what vehicle takes the title of the “world’s first ever SUV”. Many people will point to the 1946 Jeep Station Wagon, a mass-produced all-steel Willys for the masses that even came with four-wheel-drive in 1949.The OG Jeep Wagoneer, AKA the SJ, arrived in 1963 bringing what we recognize now as a boxy off-roader with more than a hint of luxury and refinement. But it was the Range Rover of 1970 which arguably created the magic formula for the modern SUV. The Range Rover (or Range Rover Classic as it is now known) was produced from 1970 to 1996 and was upmarket enough to be the ride of choice for none other than the Queen. When it comes to premiumization, it doesn't get any better than that. The '90s Saw The SUV Hit The Big Time Jeep You could probably point to Jeep's beloved XJ Cherokee for being responsible for making SUVs as big (excuse the pun) as they are today. The XJ of the '80s had a very car-like construction, as well as being offered with the option of a five-speed manual (as well as a three-speed auto) at launch. While initial engines weren't that exciting — an AMC-designed 2.5-liter inline-four or a General Motors-sourced 2.8-liter V6 — a later Power-Tech 4.0-liter inline-six gave the XJ better acceleration than a 1981 Ferrari Mondial 8.Suddenly, customers didn't have to compromise between onroad performance and off-road capability. Vehicles such as the '90s Ford Bronco and Chevy Tahoe, along with later Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Porsche Cayenne suddenly gave people a one-car solution in a do-it-all vehicle that was as happy on the school run as it was crossing a desert. But there is one SUV that perfectly balances on-road presence with admirable reliability — and it's not what you might think. The BMW X5 Perfectly Balances Reliability With Presence BMWBMW unveiled the first generation of the all-wheel-drive five-door vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in 1999. Upmarket SUVs like the X5 may seem a dime a dozen these days, but when this vehicle was launched it was pretty groundbreaking. Posh marques such as Porsche and BMW were known for sports cars and refined luxury, not driving across fields. But BMW knew what it was doing, and the X5 was an instant sales success. Within one decade, over 845,000 units of the iconic off-road Bimmer were sold. But while it may be easy to scoff that the only off-roading an X5 ever does is bumping up the curb outside soccer practice, the big Bavarian SUV is actually very dependable. The2026 BMW X5has a commendable Quality & Reliability rating at J.D. Power, scoring 81/100. To put that into context, the 2026 Lexus TX scores a touch less, with a score of 80/100.Even older X5s do well, with 2015 models also achieving 81/100 for Quality and Reliability, with 2010 models coming in at 78/100. Interestingly, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser scores 73/100 for Quality and Reliability at J.D. Power. Why The X5 Matches The Range Rover On Image BMW Gone are the days when the Range Rover screamed boxy, upmarket capability. Over the last 20 or 30 years, Land Rover has consistently smoothed over the lines of its range topper, throwing bucket loads of premium luxury fitments at each new model. Nowadays, you get heated armrests and "hot stone" Range Rover massage seats, with an 8" touchscreen for the rear. This means that the trajectory of the Range Rover, while retaining its off-road ability, has now curved to meet the X5, which is a premium product from a German manufacturer that has been launched into the off-road segment. The futuristic, pebble-like look of the G05, the sixth-gen X5, matches the Range Rover for upmarket style. You can also opt for Multi-Contour massage seats in the X5, too. The BMW X5 Today BMW The BMW X5's replacement is due to arrive some time this year. The current model, which was launched in 2018, is still available in the USA and still makes for an interesting buy. All X5s come with bags of presence as standard and good reliability. The base sDrive40i trim has rear-wheel drive, but the xDrive40i and xDrive M60i models are all fitted with all-wheel drive.Non-full-fat M models have a 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six and there is a plug-in hybrid xDrive50e with an extra electric motor bolted on for a combined 483 horsepower. If you really want Range Rover presence, then the M60i, with its 523-hp twin-turbo V8, is hard to beat. The $131,000 X5 M Competition is a supercar dressed as an SUV, managing to sprint to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. What Else To Buy If You Want Reliability And Presence BMW There are a few other SUVs that not only look good but won't let you down. It might not be as well known as the Escalade, but the 2025 Cadillac XT6 is a handsome three-row luxury SUV with good reliability. The XT6 scores an impressive 85/100 for Quality and Reliability over at J.D. Power, with prices starting at around just $50,000. You don't get a punchy V8, but the choice of either a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine does the job, and the styling oozes upmarket SUV. The 2025 BMW X7 has similar high dependability to its X5 sibling, scoring 81/100 for Quality & Reliability. You can choose from a base X7 xDrive40i with a 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six-cylinder, right up to a monster Alpina XB7 with a 630-horsepower V8. But There Is One Other Ultra Reliable Off-Roader That Is Just Like A Range Rover Land Rover Interestingly, the 2026 Land Rover Defender has a higher J.D. Power Quality & Reliability rating than the X5 or X7, coming in with 82/100 for the 2026 mode While it might be marketed as being more rugged, the Defender (also available asthe mighty Octa) has the same presence as the Range Rover (which has a 79/100 Quality and Reliability rating), just in a different flavor.Sources: Jdpower.com
